Thompson. secretaryâ€"treasurer of the Temiskaming Firemeon‘s Association, gives details of the joint convention to be‘ held at Noranda, Sept. 18th, 19th and 20th. As noted in a recent issue of The Advance, the District of Cochrane Firemen‘s Association and the Temisâ€" kamingz Firemen‘s Association arse to hold a joint convention at Noranda, @ue., on Sept. 18th, 19th and 20th. For twentyâ€"three years the Temiskaming Firemen‘s Association has been holding these annual conventions where the firefighters of the north gather to disâ€" cuss mauiters of interest and to work out plans for better fire protection for the North. These conventions have been of very striking value to the North. Some years ago, with the great growth of the North, and the immense territory taken in by the Temiskamâ€" ing Firemen‘s Association, it was daeâ€" cided to form an association for this part of the North, as brigades up here found it difficult to attend deomonstraâ€" tions and conventions held in the lowâ€" er part of the territory, Thus, for some years, the Cochrane Piremen‘s Association has been holding its field days and conventions separate from the clder ~Temiskaming association. This year, however, the two associations are holding a joint convention at Noranda, and this will no doubt mean that both associations will greatly benefit. Timmins policc made a sweeping cianup of the hcbo jungle at the east ond of town last week and routed out a colony living in shacks built on Hollinger and Gillies Lake mine proâ€" perties. From a modest beginning the shacks had reached the number of nearly twenty and were apparently on the increase rather than decline. Continuous complaints were being reâ€" ceived from householders of the insoâ€" lent attitude of many of the wanderâ€" ers who came to doors seeking assisâ€" tance of one kind or another. Under police supervision and with the perâ€" mission of the mining companies,. the shacks have been torn down and desâ€" troyed. A close watch will be kept in future to see that the hobo colony stay clear of the borders of the muniâ€" cipality.
