WINNIPEG starring News Reel Serial Serial If the Government thought that the road problem of the North was solved with the building of the trunk road from North Bay, the Government knows differently now. _ At present one of the matters under discussion is the question of maintenance through the few larger towns that have orâ€" ganized municipal status.. Despatches from Cobalt last week mention that representaties of the Hairleybury and Cobalt town courcils had a further conference with Mr. D. L. Miller, disâ€" trict engineer of the Northern Deâ€" velopment ‘branch on Thurgday of last week, with regard to the governâ€" ment‘s proposal to split the cost of maintaining the trunk road where the towns‘ streets are used en route. Speaking for Haileybury Mayor G. T. Hamilton assured Mr. Miller that the town would be willing to have the Northern Development proceed with the work and bill the municipality for half the cost. So far as Cobalt is concerned, it was arranged that the town itself would shoulder the burden for the balance of the present year, the representatives, Mayor Frank Lendrum and Councillor Alex D. Binâ€" ny, agreeing that the main road would have to be rebult at an early date, and probably next Spring. Burt Soâ€" pha, town foreman also accompanied the delegation. During the informal discussion which developed, Mr. Milâ€" ler _ said it was practically certain that the department would share the costs, fiftyâ€"fifty, of both construction and maintenance. It was pointed out by the various delegates that condiâ€" tions were different in the two towns, and that while a surface of the same nature as is provided in the townships would probably meet Haileybury‘s reâ€" quirements meantime, Cobalt would need different treatment The local deâ€" legates suggested that Mr. Miller obâ€" tain, at his convenience, some data regarding costs of rebuilding the road in town and they would confer with him again later in the year. _ The mayor and Councillor Binny took the view that they were making preliminâ€" ary movements, and that next year‘s council would have to tackle the proâ€" blem of reâ€"surfacing the streets through which the highway runs. Councillor Binny suggested that work similar to that done in 1924, when a water bound macadam surface was laid, supplemented by tarvia treatâ€" ment, might meet the conditions in town. There was talk also of a paved thoroughfare, similar to those in North Bay and Timmins, but it was felt the cost would be exeessive for a Present plans are to have the annuâ€" al pcnic of the Caledonian Society at Dalton‘s Park, Timmins on Wedâ€" nesday afternoon, August 3l1st. With good weather a good crowd and a good time are expected, with special feaâ€" tures for the vounesters. day in U that day intends t North Bay and Timmins, but it was felt the cost would be exceessive for a town in the financial position of Coâ€" balt. There need never be any fear of lack of space for tailings disposal ‘here; these will be carried away by the river flowing at the foot of the hill on which the plant is located. Access to the camps, mining and milling plant is by a gradual grade from the southeast. The charter of the Gold Hill Mining Company was taken out on the 6th of September and by the same date just four years hence, the company will be putting the first gold ore through its milling plant. This is a record in deâ€" velopment of a gold mine in Northern Ontario. _ When it is realized that several miles of road have been bult by the company; 810 feet of shaft @ml\mg has ‘been done along with 1,018 feet of crossâ€"cutting and 2,200 feet of drifting on veins, with 30 feet of raising, as well as the building of a milling plant of 75 tons capacity in that tlme it becomes apparent there has been keen supervision of the exâ€" pendltute of the shareholders‘ money in the development of the mine. The Cornish Oneâ€"andâ€"All failed to gather in the muchâ€"wanted points on Tuesday night when they were at home to the Dome Blues, the latter winning out by three goals to one. The Cornish have been playing good football all season, but have failed to throw off the regular jinx that seems to have trailed them this year. It was thought that perhaps their luck had turned last week when they made their nice win from the Lanes., but Tuesday of this week spoiled it again. However, the Cornish Oneâ€"andâ€"All have the satisfaction of knowing that they have been playing for the love of the sport, and the winning or losâ€" ing is not material after all, _ The Dome have a wellâ€"matched team and won on merit on Tuesday. According to the despatiches coming over the wires yesterday from Barrie Ont., a day or so has passed: without iurtller arrests in what is generally known as the Beeton case. _ There were two further arrests made on Tuesday in the district surrounding Beeton, where Alex Hodge, a farmer killed an armed bandit in what was believed to be a life and death stugâ€" gle about two week ago.
