In the discussion in the House an interesting statement was made hy Hon. Jas. Lyons. ‘*The North won‘t stand much longer for the expenditure of eighty or ninety millions on roads in Southern Ontario, while they are not getting a proportionate expendiâ€" ture,‘‘ said Mr. Lyons, ‘‘We in the North are as much entitled to the exâ€" penditure as the old part of the proâ€" â€"vinee.""~ As Minister of Lands and Forests Hon. Mr. Lyons did much for the advance of the North. Perhaps, as a private member he may do even more. He knows the needs; he had «certainly had the needs impressed upâ€" on him. He knows that â€"the key to all effective development lies in roads and more roads, He should prove a very ally, as an independent member of the House, in the struggle to seâ€" cure for the North its due chance to make good. 7 MR Eo Hon. Mr, Lyons has suffered what may be termed the penalty of public serviceâ€"he had endured misrepreâ€" sentation and abuse; he had sacrificed his own interests, only to be paid in reerimination and insinuation. _ He may yet reap what is perhaps the only presentâ€"day reward for public service,â€"the consciousness that he has taken a true part in the securing of progress and prosperity for the community in which he lives, and be voted for specified works rather than in a lump sum as the urgent needs may demand. _ This form of criticism was far from effective. The Premier was able to show with ease not only that there was decided need for the expenditures, but also that such expenditures were really profitâ€" able investments so far as the Proâ€" vince is concerned. The Opposition missed the point upon which fair criticism might have been madeâ€"the fact that the approâ€" priation is inadequate in view of the pressing needs. â€" The whole prosperity of the Province hinges on the proâ€" gress of the North Land. During the past few years the develqpment of the North Land has steadied and asâ€" sisted Ontario through trying times. The wealth of the North in minerais, in forests resources and in agriculâ€" tural possibilities may easily mean the greatest measure of prosperity and progress for all Ontario., But to reâ€" ceive such dividends Ontario must make investments. [Phere can be no proper development in this new counâ€" try without roads. The need for roads is so extended, that the problem can only be approached with succeess in terms of big money. â€" The true criticism sof the five million dollar appropriation is that it does not apâ€" proach the problem in a big enough way. â€"With the Government demandâ€" ing of private enterprises the expenâ€" diture of at least eighty million dolâ€" lars in this North in the next two years, the Opposition assuredly would be warranted in requiring the Governâ€" ment to appropriate at least ten milâ€" lion dollars for the development of the North. KEXA mE CAE SE C CC #® through that .community has beneâ€" fitted the Province and through the Province has advantaged the whole Dominion. “Roads and more roads!‘‘ That is the solution to the chief problems of the North! The only fair eriticism for a five million dollar appropuatwn is that it is not enough! _ This (Thursday) evening, the serâ€" vice will be at the Salvation Army Hall, Major Kunight, of North Bay, being the speaker. for the appropriation of five million dollars for development work in the North Land. None of the members of the House had the temerity to op pose the appropriation, but some of the members of the Opposition affectâ€" ed to believe that the money should In the Ontario Legislature some days ago, the Premier, Hon. G. Howard Ferguson, who is now acting as Minister of Lands and Forests unâ€" til such time as a successor is chosen for Hon. Jas. Lyons, made a motion for the annronpriation of five million LACK OF ROADS HANDICAPS PROGRESS OF THE NORTH. Member of the Canadian Weckly Newspapers Association.
