Some weeks ago The Advance made reference to the complaint so well voiced by the Cochrane Board of Trade regarding the lack of accomâ€" modation for the public at such stopâ€" ping places on the T. N. 0. as Nellhe Lake and other alleged stations. The Cochrane Board of Trade urged that Nellie Lake and all other stations of similar importance ‘be provided with heat and light and platform aceomâ€" modation. The Cochrane Board of Trade, as yet, has not secured its deâ€" sire in. this particular, but in any event it bhas roused the T. N.; 0. Of course, all the promses have hot been fulfilled. For instance, about nine months ago it was promised that improvements would be made to the sire in event it oMecials similar stations. Mr. Drinkwater pointed out that there was now a cinâ€" der platform of standard length in Nellie Lake and that owing to wilful damage to station property which has been committed in the past it was found alimost impossible to bring the station, without an agent, to a bhigher level. A stove, brand new last year, had been smashed, lamps earried away and other vandalism carried on. Acâ€" cording to the Cochrane Post, the T. N. 0. is equal to the best operated railroad on the continent, but less saâ€" cred institutions like the C. P. R., the Lehigh Valley, the New York Central, the Wabash, etce., protect their own property. They do not take the attiâ€" tude that a man should refuse to buy wood, but should arrange to freeze to death, because the neighbors make free with his woodpile. However, it must be admitted that the T. N. 0. is improving. Attention is now parid to any legitimate complaints from the public. Things undoubtedly have been a lot better since Mr. Geo., W. Lee has been Acting Chairman of© the road. Possibly, if he were Chairman in realâ€" ity and the Commission were reâ€"organ ized with only North Land Men on it, the people might secure a service and accommodation that would be entirely satisfactory‘ to all fairâ€"minded people. Under Mr. Lee‘s acting chairmanship it has not ‘been necessary for the dinary people to take off their hats and their ‘boots ibefore entering the presence, and at least the people have been given some courteous promises. Of course, all the promises have hot been fulfilled. For instance., about C POI TLE PORLCUPINE ADVANCE The Ontario Government has n good its promise, given some time in regard to assisiing the work of Children‘s Aid Society in Temisl ing. To enable the Children‘s pany ( distrie navinyg during society in tiis its indehbtedness at Haileybury in the (Government of $300G0. Mr. ing. To enable the Children‘s Aid Society in this district to liquidate its indebteduness and get the Shelter at Haileybury in running order again, the Government has made the grant of $3600. (Mtr. Geo. T. Smith, the treasurer of the Society, has been chicefly instrumental in obtaining the zrant, according to The Haileybury. (Note: The Haileyburian did not get this from The Nugget, so the informâ€" ation is absolutely correct). The Chilâ€" ren‘s Aid Society has had a useful but difficult life in Temiskaming. On acâ€" count of the extent of the termtory and the amount of the extent of the territory and the amount of work to hand, together with the lack of a genâ€" eral appreciation of the value of the work, the C. A. 8. has always had q struggzie. This year, finances were so low that the Children‘s Shelter was closed down altogether, though arâ€" rangoments were made for carrying on the work on a reduced seale. The Government was appealed to with the hope that it would uderstand the value of C.A.S. work in building un good citizenship. Tlie three thousand dollar gerant is the Government‘s reply to the appeal. ovVERNMENT GIVES $3000 GRANT TO CHMILDREN‘S AID } af ‘ara and coming in toO the Lay y railroad. ‘This hunch eomâ€" d a number of Finnlanders who going to work for a lumber comâ€" operating in the New Liskeard ‘ct. _ The men were all exâ€"soldiers z> sorved on the side of the Allies o the war. â€" _, O. train lea~ n d OlUI made a m ~% eW y 3 lz n enc es As i. i If the policyholder survives the term of the endowment be receives an income monthly which is gusaranteed for at least £0 years.
