Wednesday, September 8, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C3 FALL INSTRUCTION/BACK TO SCHOOL Top safety lessons to teach children Teaching children basic safety lessons can keep them safer while they're in school and throughout the year. These lessons are based on the National Fire Protection Association's Risk Watch program, a new compre hensive injury prevention curriculum available throughout North America for classroom use. • Always buckle up when rid ing in the car; children twelve and under should ride in the back seat. • Stay in your seat when riding on a bus and hold on to bus handrails when getting on and off a bus. • When waiting for a bus, stay at least five giant steps (10 feet/three metres) from the curb until the bus has completely stopped. • Wear a helmet every time you ride your bicycle and make sure the helmet fits correctly. • Always walk your bicycle when you need to cross a street. • Use crosswalks for crossing streets and remember to look left, right, left before crossing. (Children under 10 should cross with the assistance of a grown-up). • No pushing or shoving any one when lining up or playing on school grounds. • At lunch time, stay seated while eating; no running or playing. • Never accept medicine, vita mins, candy or other food from anyone other than your parent or caregiver. • When the fire alarm sounds, stop what you are doing and immedi ately exit the school. Once you are out side, go quickly to your meeting place for roll call. Children and families can also visit www.sparky.org., NFPA's fun and edu cational interactive fire safety Web site. Although graduat ing from a university, communi ty college, technical institute or private vocational school does not guar antee employment, it greatly improves your chances of finding and keeping work. The costs of post-secondary education are high. It is important for you to do your homework to find out; • What type of education you want. • Where to get it. • Which schools and programs are best. • What students who have taken the pro gram say about it. • How much your studies will cost. • How you will be able to pay for your studies. • If your education will help you get a job. • How much you can expect to earn. • If you need student loans, whether you will be able to repay them. To reach your educational goal you will need to plan ahead. The earlier you and your family start planning, the more options you will have. A good plan begins with an understanding of what the costs of post-secondary education will be. Your costs will vary depending on: • The type of school you attend (e.g., uni versity; community college; technical institute or private vocational school). • Your program and how long it is; (for example; Annual tuition fees range from $1,200 for some full-time community college programs to $3,500 for many university programs. Tuition costs may be higher for private vocational school programs. You will also have to pay for books and supplies, and these costs may vary for differ ent programs within the same institution). • Where you will live during school (e.g., at home, in a residence or in shared housing). Saving For Your Education You should save from part-time and summer employment prior to your post-secondary studies. If you receive government student assistance and decide to work part-time during your studies, you must report your earnings to the provincial student assistance office. The amount of your support may be reduced, but you will be reducing the amount of student loans you will be required to repay. Some universities and col leges have work/study programs or other opportunities, which provide stu dents with part-time jobs on campus. Inquire at the school you plan to attend. Family savings; Investments may include Canada Savings Bonds, Guaranteed Investment Certificates, Mutual Funds and Treasury Bill Accounts. Parents may set up an account "in trust" for your studies. You may find it useful for you and your parents to talk to a banker or a financial planner. Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP): RESPs are investment tax shelters which hold parental contributions in trust until you attend post-secondary studies. Money deposited into an RESP is not tax-deductible, but interest is consid ered to be your income and is not taxed while left in the RESP. When you withdraw money during studies, your income is likely to be low enough that you will pay little or no income tax. If your parents have an RESP for you, they can invest up to $4,000 a year up to a lifetime maximum of $42,000. Some examples of RESPs include the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation, Heritage Scholarship Trust Foundation, the USC Education Savings Plan, The Children's Education Trust of Canada, Universitas Foundation of Canada or self-managed plans. See your local yellow pages under Scholarship-Educational-Plans for more informa tion or consult a financial advisor.
