Parents d i d n 't get involved in too many aspects of the i r c h i l d 's ed u ca t ion . Times have changed and parents are taking an active role in teaching their ch i ld re n ou ts ide o f school . Even simple ac t iv i t ies such as measur ing the hole you dug for a new t ree or loca t ing the country d iscussed in the news on a globe will help children assoc ia te what they learn in school with the real world. Here are some s imple act iv it ies to help your chi ldren become en thusias t ic about learning. Make t ime for your ch i ldr en. Studies have shown that lack of t ime with parents may resul t in behaviour problems, indi fference to authori ty and low se l f - e s teem . Let your ch i ld re n know y o u 're there if they need you. If you work a lot, consider taking your chi ldren with you in the evening or on a weekend and show them what you do. This will help them unders tand what you are doing when y o u 're not with them. 2. Read to your chi ldren. Reading is used extens ively at school and works well at home, too. Reading ski lls help children feel in c o n t rol . They have the cont ro l to read on their own and to learn abou t the wor ld . Cons ide r set t ing up a re ad ing area in the house. Go to this area every day and take turns reading to each other. Talk about the s tor ies you read, and draw pic tu res of the characters or put on l i t t le " p l a y s " ac t ing out the story. 3. Talk to your chi ldren. Ask them about the ir day at school . What did they learn? What fun th ings did they do? Tell them about your day. Did you talk to anyone from a faraway c i ty? If so, show them the ci ty on the g lobe. Did you see any funny cars on the way to work? Tell them about anything they might relate to. 4. Make l e a rn ing an eve ryday expe r ience . Have your chi ldren measure the ingredien ts whi le you make dinner; count the a lum inum cans in the recy c l ing bin. Show your chi ldren the trip y o u 're taking on a map; talk about TV shows you watch together . The list is endless . It d o e s n 't mat ter what you do with your chi ldren.
