Sunday, September 26, 1999 Organ donation walker visits Oakville Tuesday A Guelph resident walk ing 2,000 km around Ontario to promote organ donation is making a stop in Oakville, Tuesday. George M arcello, a long-time Guelph YMCA member and liver transplant recipient, started the 2,000 km journey to say thank you to donors and their families, who donate organs so that others might live. Marcello began his trek on June 26th with official stops and events planned at 35 Ontario YMCAs. Marcello and the YMCA of Oakville invites others to show their support by walk ing three kilometers with him from the Band Shell in Coronation Park to the Oakville YMCA facility on Rebecca Street. The walk begins at the band shell at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28th and travels eastbound on Lakeshore Road, arriving at the YMCA about 1 p.m. The trek has a secondary goal to raise the public's awareness of the critical shortage of donated organs. Canada has the second low est per capita participation in an organ donation pro gram in the industrialized world. Along with John Totten, another liver transplant recipient, M arcello has formed Step By Step, an organ transplant association run from the offices of the Canadian Liver Foundation in Toronto. The objective of the Step By Step Association is to celebrate the generosity of the families of organ donors and to raise awareness for the importance o f signing a donor card and communi cating your wishes to fami ly and friends.
