I was so excited, I was screaming," she says with continued enthusiasm. It all started when she decided to enter a model search at Oakville Place; only she and her mom arrived too late. However, they did learn of the Colgate search for the following Saturday, which was run ning in conjunction with Another model search. Burton-Volpe decid ed she wasn't experienced enough for the catwalk competition but could certainly put on her best smile. "We had to walk along the cat- walk and smile, and show our per sonalities," she explains. "They picked about 30 for callbacks, and I was one o f three girls who was picked from that." A video was then made of each o f the Finalists from the various provinces and sent to Colgate for the final selection. "Colgate picked three from Canada and I was one," says an excited Burton-Volpe, adding that each finalist also went through an interview process to determ ine their scholastic ambitions and their ability to fulfill the terms of the contract. Burton-Volpe's involve ment in public speaking was an added bonus for her. "I will be promoting Colgate products for one y ear...F o r the next year I will advertise for C o lgate ...A nd there will be an issue with me in 'Flair' magazine about the contest; and I will speak on City TV," she exclaims. "They also wanted som eone who was almost finished high school, and I'm in Grade 12." So, the Oakville student met all the criteria, and is ready to flash her winning smile for all to see. And that smile will be quite genuine as she thinks of the scholarship that will kick-start her career dreams. "I would like to go to Ryerson for performance. I take arts and sci ences in (high) school. I take biolo gy, chemistry and math as well as dramatic arts," she says, explaining that these course choices keep her options open to pursue either per forming arts or dental hygiene as a career. "You can only dance for so long. I could dance first, then be a dental hygienist later." W hatever her choice, Burton- Volpe's smile will come in handy, as will the $10,000 it won for her. "For a 17-year-old, $10,000 is a lot of money," she says with that winning smile o f hers. CALL 1 888 535-7777
