19 Win over London FC keeps Blue Devils six points up in Leagu e l standings A goal in the first minute by Taylor Mc Namara got the Oakville Blue Devils off to their customary good start in League1 soccer play last weekend, but the Men' s W est Divi sion leaders had to work until the very end against London FC to record a 2-1 victory. The Blue Devils needed the three points as they attempt to stave off Sigma FC in the battle for first place. Khody Ellis put Oakville up 2 -0 with a goal in the 4 0 th minute but FC London stormed back in the second half. Matthew Albert cut the lead in half in the 74th minute to add some suspense, but the Blue Devils hung on. Oakville head coach Duncan Wilde said he knew it would be a tough match once he saw FC London' s gamesheet. "They cam e today a lot stronger I think than they have been in previous w eeks, w h ich surprised us a little b it," he said. "C redit to th em , they p u t on a good g a m e ." The game was played in oppressive heat, which took its toll in the second half. "We thought it was important to get to the 65th , 70th minute in front, because we knew that both teams would need their bench and it proved to be so," added Wilde. W ith the win the Blue Devils improved to 1 7 -2 -1 for 5 2 points, six points ahead of the 1 4 -1 -4 Sigma F C , w hich has a game in hand. The Blue Devils are back in action Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. at Monarch Park in Toronto when they face the seventh-place Sanjaxx Li ons (4 -1 3 -3 ). The U 17 team will face the Iroquois Na tionals during the 2 0 1 7 Heritage Cup cel ebrations, which features a showdown be tween a Canadian senior team and the U.S. at the First Ontario Centre. The Oakville players are Jonathan Gagliardi, transition, Curtis Goddard and Justin Sykes, attack, and Matthew W right, defence, all members of the Oakville Hawks. A total of 20 midget-aged athletes from across the country, all members of their re spective provincial teams at the 2 0 1 7 CLA National Championship, were selected by the national team coaching staff. Five provinces are represented on Team Canada' s roster, which includes nine play ers from Ontario, eight from Alberta and one each from British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia. "W e are confident this group of young men will represent Canada well," said head coach Josh Sanderson, who captured gold at the 2 011 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Cham pionship in Prague and also played in the in augural Heritage Cup in 2002.
