He noted that 30 years ago there were issues such as bullying and spreading rumours about students. "Not new stuff. Stuff we're all familiar with. This has been the experience of high school for a number of years," said Butler. "But the way in which we reacted to 13 Rea sons Why, you would think this was the first time anything like this had ever been shown." Months after watching 13 Reasons Why, Butler heard feedback from teenagers who viewed it. Most seemed to be unfazed by it, he noted. "I didn't find teens to be that surprised by any of this," he said, noting they watched it and moved on. "One of the interesting things is this is 13 hours of TV" said Butler. "The fact teens have 13 hours of unsupervised time is sort of in the background. If that is able to happen, what else is able to happen?" Butler looked to how people spend their time. "People are consuming things in rooms by themselves, reacting to things, not in a group... staring at something, generally alone," said But ler.
