D e b a t in g c a r r ie s o n a t W h it e O a k s S .S . a ll y e a r by Marta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff total of 5 7 debaters from 12 schools, in Halton, Peel and Toronto took part in the fifth annual debate cam p held at W hite Oaks Secondary School (W OSS) this summer. This year, the cam p ran from M onday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m ., from Aug. 21 to 2 5 -- the w eek before school started, said Hamish Guthrie, W OSS teacher and debate coach. The cost was $ 3 0 0 for the week, and lunch was provided. Funds raised are given to W OSS' debate program , said Guthrie, and no one is given a salary. A group of about 10 experienced and strong debaters assisted Guthrie in various aspects of the camp. Debate cam p began with a show debate, demonstrating effective form, structure and technique, followed by a discussion of the debate, and a post-m ortem on how it went. E ach debater participated in several debates each day. Participating students included those ranging from Grades 5 to 10. Participants debated topics such as: all high school students should wear school uniforms; taxing ju nk food; denying aid to countries with poor hum an rights records; and, whether the revolution in George Orwell' s book Animal Farm was successful. Guthrie said there were workshops each day during debate cam p on various aspects of debate such as: how to construct a case; how A Students take part in the fifth annual debate cam p held a t White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) over the summer. The cost to attend raised funds for the high school's debate team throughout the year as none of those who run the cam p take paym ent for their work. Debaters were encouraged to read the newspaper and to follow radio and television news regularly, as m any of the topics for debate are from current events, Guthrie added. N ext year, to make the program even m ore manageable, Guthrie said enrollment at the cam p would be limited to 4 0 students. Participants will be chosen based on the information provided in the registration form about readiness, experience and aptitude for debate. The deadline for n ext year' s debate cam p is M ay 15.
