Don't trust just anyone to insure your car, see me: Hal Mayer 2861 Sherwood Heights Dr. 829-520 A U T How to give a boost Most drivers carry a set of jumper (booster) cables, but how many know how to properly and safely use them? The following illustrates the correct way to boost a car that has a dead (discharged) battery. Be sure the vehicles do not touch With the huge number of sunglasses out there, how do you find something that helps you see as good as you look? The `dead' vehicle Ignition in off position Connect positive (+) cable to the positive post of the vehicle to be boosted. Do your eyes get more tired than they used to by the end of the day? It could be those shades - or lack of them . . . dude. It's no secret that sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays, as well as helping to maintain a look of casual indifference commonly known as "cool." But if your morning or evening commute sends you face-first into gleaming sunshine and your sunglasses aren't up to the task, you could find yourself rubbing your eyes and squinting for the rest of the day - not a good way to pro tect your image. Sunglasses are worth it for drivers - no doubt about it. `They provide shade and cut down on glare," says optometrist Roger Yee. "If you get the light shining in your face, it may cause you to squint or get headaches." "Your eyes may feel like they tire more quickly from squinting so much," agrees optometrist Gena Chatto. "It's one of the biggest reasons people come home with headaches after a day's work." And you thought it was all that work you were doing. So what should you look for? Obviously you want to cut UV-A rays, and preferably UV-B rays, too. Your windshield will cut out some of these rays; but it won't help you if your window is open or you have to get out of the car. But you don't have to spend a fortune to get good driving sunglasses. "When it comes to inexpensive sunglasses, the main issue is really the optical quality of the lens," says Chatto. "Cheap sunglasses may not be bad, but the quality isn't necessarily the same." Chatto says lower-quality lenses may have waves or other distortions in them that can inter fere with vision. Mass-produced lenses also run the risk of not being properly centered over your pupil, further distorting your vision or causing eyestrain. Couple that with the windshield distortion and your car's blind spots and you're just look ing for trouble. "Some patients are more sensitive than oth ers to imperfections in the lens," she says. Other options are more a matter of personal preference than science both optometrists sug gest. Wraparound sunglasses, for example, are popular with some people because they cut down on glare coming in from the sides or reflecting off inside of lens from behind you. "But it cuts down on any peripheral vision," says Yee. "You have to physically turn your head to the left or right. Some people find it bothers them; some don't." And then there's color - again, mostly a mat ter of personal preference. Grey is the most neu tral choice, especially given that "different col ors don't really solve different problems," says Yee. "But," he adds, "amber, orange or brown lenses may help distinguish traffic signals and brake lights - the red can look more red and the green can look more green." It really depends how sensitive someone is to changes in contrast, he says. That principle is the same one used by the manufacturers of products like Blue Blockers, which claim to cut down glare and sharpen con trast by filtering out blue light. That's also why hunters and sharpshooters wear yellow lenses. But personal preference aside, there's one thing the two optometrists agree on unequivo cally. "Cosmetic tints like light blue and pink are not good for glare," Chatto says. So next time you plan to hit the road, don't forget to leave the rose-colored glasses at home. -- By WBC News Services To ground ( I Connect the negative (-) cable to the negative post of the starter vehicle. According to company insiders, the overhaul yields a much quieter and smoother ride. As well, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder Alpha engine has received some tweaks that should improve both power and economy. At the time of this writing, Hyundai was still ringing out the new car, so offi cial horsepower numbers have yet to be finalized. Hyundai is quoting last year's figure of 92, but thinks the final number could be as high as 95.
