And, she added, during the last of her two lengthy stays in China, she was a print journalist, which also helped her move without notice - a notebook is not as conspicu ous as a television camera. (Wong lived in China from 1972 to '80 and again from 1988 to '94. She studied at Beijing University and participat ed in the cultural revolution.) Her most recent visit was an illegal one, but even during her legal stays, she did a lot of sneaking around, risking being detained. In the end, she said, she just didn't care. She was there to do a job, and she was going to do it. "I decided that you cannot worry about the consequences. You just have to go in and do it. Otherwise, you'd never do anything. Because I know they (the Chinese government) are not going to like it," she said, admitting that her hus band was worried that she'd been thrown in jail. However, she was convinced that any incar ceration wouldn't be lengthy, and it would give her more experiences to write about. "You prob ably won't die in there...It would have been fine rr X for awhile...I have experienced so many things. I wanted to do hard labour in China when I was a student so I would know what it was like...It's just part of being a journalist." As for her newest book, she figures it will be banned in China, just as her first book, Red China Blues, was. But those who do read it, she said, will laugh out loud and will learn things about China that they never knew. "So it will be fun to read and eye-opening," she said. "I make the reader my traveling companion on my vari ous adventures, getting into trouble." Next on her agenda is a screenplay based on Red China Blues with director Wayne Wang, director of The Joy Luck Club and the recently released Anywhere But Here. "He's been to all the meetings and he wants to do it. But nothing is signed," she says of Wang, adding that she was asked to do the screenplay when the original writer backed out. "Somebody lent me a book on how to write a screenplay...I don't really believe that it will ever happen, but they think it will. It's fun, you know." D I I J X x: avid Bradstreet, Juno award win ner for Best New Male Vocalist in 1977, will be in concert at the White Oak Folk Club's final ses sion for 1999. Bradstreet, widely known for his work as a composer, songwriter and vocalist, has eight albums bearing his name and a Juno award nomination as recent as this year. His music credits include film and television soundtracks and scoring, talent discovery, and record production for a variety of artists. For the former Oakville resident, the late 1970s represented a impressive phase in his career, which included two albums, David Bradstreet and Dreaming in Colour, as well as a major tour and high profile appearances. After making a decision to go indepen dent, Bradstreet became a record producer. He released the first album by a then unknown Jane Siberry on his own Street Records label in 1981, and another by Billie Hughes the same year. Putting live performances on the back burner throughout the '80s and '90s, Brad street developed a new career built around his skills as a musician, composer, and record producer. In that time he created music for films, including the short Collater al Damage, which received a Genie nomina tion, and a tele-documentary on sports, For the Love o f the Game, which garnered him a Gemini nomination. He also got involved in a series of newage music albums with noted recording artist Dan Gibson and his Solitudes series, which led to this year's Juno nomination for Whis pering Woods in the Best Instrumental Album category. Bradstreet's recently released CD Renais sance, another collection of his own songs, is the first album of his own songs in 17 years, and it is has already been heard coast to coast on CBC. The folk singer's Oakville concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21st in The Oakville Rod and Gun Club, 36 Upper Mid dle Rd. E.
