The students received communi ty service plaques and a $100 cheques. The nine recipients are: Anika Malik, Queen Elizabeth Park High School, who volunteered at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. After an intense and nerve-racking application process, she was selected to be in charge of the hematology and oncology playroom. Her first reaction was being appalled at the number of children who were in her playroom. Although she had Nintendo, a Gameboy, endless movies, she learned the most important thing was that the kids didn't feel sorry for themselves. Christina Chabot, T.A. Blakelock High School, planned, organized and conducted a three-week campaign to raise money to. purchase Health Education kits for children in Third World countries who were suffering from the horrendous realities of child labour, and prostitution. She acquired information and with the help of her human relations class, sponsored bake sales, `cash in a jar', jelly bean guessing contests and a volleyball challenge. In addition, she acted as a youth counsellor at the Appleby College Summer Music Camp. Over the years, she has volun teered at the Halton Women's Place, Joseph Brant Hospital and OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital. Christine Levai, St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, is a found ing member of the Amnesty International Multi-Issue Club at her school. She devoted many volunteer hours in a supportive, creative and dedi cated manner, organized petitions, events, projects and presentations. Playing a leadership role in raising awareness regarding human rights vio lations around the world for students and staff, she has helped this group become an energetic and very active club at her school. Tiffany Sagel, MacLachlan College, is a student volunteer at the Mississauga Hospital, where she works in the reha bilitation unit. She deals with people who have suffered strokes and various other problems. Her job is to help them get better in order to go home. She han dles friendly visiting, and meal-time assistance helping those who are unable to feed themselves. Fariel Karmali, St. Mildred'sLightboum School, taught English-as-aSecond-Language to immigrants from Afghanistan. She also taught English and Math to Grade I students, and cur rently teaches religious knowledge every Saturday. In addition, she is a Big Sister with the Ismaili Volunteer Corps, responsible for over 100 children. Carlijn Moester, Oakville Trafalgar High School, works at St. Joseph's Health Centre in the Paediatrics Ward, and assists nurses with their daily rou tines at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She also assists with the care of residents at Extendicare Nursing Home. Her volunteer service began in 1993 with St. John Ambulance Brigade, followed by helping at the Churchill Place Retirement Residence. Craig Johnson, Appleby College, organized a work program for Camp Trillium, a camp for children with can cer. He also volunteered to do chores for senior citizens who could no longer maintain their grounds and houses, accumulating over 100 service hours. He is currently Head of Service at Appleby College, chairing the Service Council meetings, liaising between fac ulty and students on community service issues. He helped organize the the Bell United Way's `Keep the Ball Rolling' event, and takes part in the Duke of Edinburgh Challenge program as a counsellor for special needs children. Nida Zaidi, White Oaks Secondary School, is a member of the Red Cross Youth Council.. She volunteers at the Oakville Waterfront Festival and at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. In addition, she is active as a member of several other school-based groups. Geoffrey Fogden, Iroquois Ridge High School, is currently Co-Prime Minister of the Student Parliament. He plans activities for students and moti vates them to volunteer and give to char ities. Active in the school music pro gram, he conducts junior students, and performs in choirs and bands. This year, he has been involved in the United Way student initiatives as emcee of the United Way Bathtub Race and as a stu dent representative for other ventures. In addition, he plays saxophone with a Toronto youth band.
