Lottery ticket buyer gets lucky Photo by Christine Smyth Early bird winner Omah Lail picks up the key to new BMW from Daryl Budd of Budd's BMW. `Early bird' winner drives away new BMW "Gee, I wonder if I can drive this?" With this comment, a happy and excited Omah Lall of Mississauga climbed into the driver's seat of the new yellow Dakar BMW Z3 roadster twoseater convertible at Budd's BMW. Her husband Dexter Lall sat beside her in the passenger seat. They could not believe their eyes. The car is valued at over $50,000. "We were thinking of buying a new car," said Omah, adding "we just brought a new house last year, and we wanted things to settle down a bit before buying a new car." The couple already own three older vehicles, a van and two cars. They were thinking of replacing one of them. "My kids went on the Internet to see what this type of car looks like," she continued." Omah is owner-operator of D & S West Indian Variety in Toronto, and Dexter, a customer service worker for Air Canada, is part owner of the store. The Lalls have four children: Michelle, 18, a biochemistry student at the University of Toronto; Rishi, 15, who wishes to become a pilot; Sheena, 14, who would like to become a veterinarian; and Derek, 12, who aspires to be a doctor. The early bird winner in the sixth annual Oakville Great Oakville Dream Home Lottery picked up her keys from Daryl Budd of Budd's BMW on Monday afternoon. `This is the first time I actually see the car. It's beautiful." She was so surprised at winning the car on Nov. 17th "that I kept calling to hear my name on the lottery's answering machine. I just couldn't believe it." After the draw was made, a call was made to the Lall residence informing them of her good for tune - however, only a message could be left. "When I got that message, I just started call ing." Shane Hutchinson is a very lucky man. The Belwood, Ont., bachelor purchased six tickets in the sixth annual Oakville Great Dream Home Lottery, and "I got lucky. "I've been buying tickets for this lottery for three years," he said, viewing his one-of-a-kind Mattamy WideLot Dream Home at a 60-ft. lot at the comer of Pine Glen Road and Proudfoot Trail on Tuesday morning. The 3,350 sq. ft. Dream Home has nine-foot high main floor ceilings, ceramic and strip hard wood flooring, a Cellini SE dream kitchen with granite countertops and five deluxe appliances, a cold cellar, an upstairs library, balcony, five bed rooms and three-and-a-half baths. Plus, the Dream Home includes an extensive landscape package and irrigation system, plus a security system. The luxury residence in Upper Glen Abbey is valued at $379,000. "Last year I brought 30 tickets, the previous year 15, and it's paid off for me." Hutchinson, who is a log book technician for Bombardier, tracking aircraft hours and mainte nance, admits to having purchased tickets in other lotteries where homes were among the grand prizes. Despite being a multiple ticket buyer, "I never expected to win this time. I was surprised to receive the call." Peter Gilgan, president of Mattamy Homes, called Hutchinson on Friday night minutes after drawing the winning ticket from the drum at the Mattamy Glen Abbey Sales Pavilion. "How would you like to move to Oakville?" Gilgan asked Hutchinson, after informing him of his win. "No way" was Hutchinson's first reac tion. "That's fantastic." He ordered his tickets by phone, and winning the Dream Home is his first big win from any lot tery. "I'm most definitely excited," he says. "When can I move in?" Moving to Oakville will cut down his commute to work in Downsview. Hutchinson currently lives with his parents, Cameron and Lynda Hutchinson.
