St. Andrew, on a buzzer-beating basket by Liam Murphy, nipped Burlington' s St. Raphael Hawks 33 32 to win one of the two trophies up for grabs at St. Thomas Aquinas. The girls' title was almost as close, with the St. Andrew girls making it a sweep for the Millbank Drive school by defeating St. Mar guerite 17-15. St. Andrew accomplished the feat of winning both titles in the same year in 2013 as well. In the boys' final, the players started to hit their shots in the sec ond half after the two teams played to a 10-10 tie in the first half. Coach Tallevi's team was trailing by one with 4.6 seconds remaining in the game. During a time out, he drew up a play to free St. Andrew' s top scorer, Augustas Brazdeikas, for the winning shot. Brazdeikas' s potential game winning shot failed to drop but Liam Murphy grabbed the rebound and hit the winner as the buzzer sounded. "We've had six playoff games and five have been decided by one or two points," said Tallevi, who has coached the team for 14 years. St. Raphael's Trey Robinson looked to be the hero of the game when his two-pointer from just inside the three-point line gave St. Raphael the one-point lead with 4.6 seconds left on the clock. Guard Brazdeikas led the Aveng ers with 18 points while Murphy, a forward, contributed six more. Both are in Grade 7, along with guard Dubem Obilio, another start er, so St. Andrew should be fighting for the title again next year. The team's other starters are in Grade 8 -- forward Jure Tutina and point guard Nedas Kibildis. Others who contributed to the championship included Connor Johnston, Robbie Persaud, Ryan Taylor, Kenneth Yap, Lucas Coletta, Aaron Mohamid, Tristan Malboeuf, Marcelo Chaman, Reggie Lewis, Jorge Valdes and Niko Tokic. Tallevi' s coaching staff includes Shawn Mailett, who was on the 2013 staff as well, and Jordan Spence. St. Raphael's undefeated season came to an end on that final shot. "It was a very tough way to lose a championship game," said St. Raphael' s Llewelyn Phillips, who along with John Dietrich coached the Hawks to the Burlington title. Andrew Dietrich led the St. Ra phael scoring with 12 points. Five of the team's players will head to Assumption Secondary School in the fall. · A story on the girls'fin al will ap p ear at a later date. -- Kevin Nagel PRE-SEASON POOL HEATER SALE Beat cash emergencies with a Cash Advance.
