S trik e rs lo s e c lo s e o n e in O n ta rio C u p a c tio n By Matt Schurenko SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Strike was something that the U-14 boys Oakville Strikers soccer team did, repeatedly, in the Ontario Cup finals versus North York CS Azzurri. The only problem was that nobody on the team could score. The team had many good chances, like when Michael Mederios fired the ball at close range into the post; the ball then ricocheted back and a teammate one-timed it towards the net, but the shot sailed over the top o f the goal post. And when, later on, forward John-Mark Ssennyonjo, on a partial breakaway, dribbled in close to the goalie at an oblique angle, made a nifty move to shake him, but put it off the outside of the goal post. It just didn't appear to be the Strikers' kind of afternoon. Head Coach John Farrar took the loss nobly: "It's been a terrific season. We did better than we expected. Overall I think they w e're a better team. "They were quite good." W hen asked about the missed opportunities the coach smiled, shrugged and conceded: "We missed a lot o f good chances." Alex Arbelo o f North York scored the first and only goal about mid-way into the first half. He got the goalie in a one-on-one situation and kicked the ball high and to the left, over the goalie's outstretched arms. North York appeared to control the ball better than the Strikers; however it was the Strikers that seemed to have the best scoring opportunities. Despite the loss, it was a remarkable season for the Strikers. Farrar and his staff brought the team from a lowly last place finish last season to a berth in this year's Ontario Cup finals. The tournament was held at the Coffee Time Soccer Centre in Vaughan. National champs See the afl rlewt2001 Caravans & Sebrings \ now in stock!
