Wednesday, September 13, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B7 A R TS & ENTERTAINMENT cts artist' s two passions By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Joyce Davies is a woman of colour, which has nothing to do with her skin but rather refers to her art and her life. Colour has wooed the 70-year-old Oakville artist since her "Crayola" days as a child, when she readily accepted its flamboyant attraction. And it has been a faithful suitor, remaining with her throughout her creative career, which has included dancing with the Royal Winnipeg Bal let, painting, sculpting and now quilting. Her life has also reflected that penchant for colour as she and her musician husband traveled the world, stopping to live in Britain, Sweden, Canada and the U. S. An artistic blend of her dancing and her trav eling is apparent in her colourful quilt, titled Caribana. This quilt is prominently featured on the first page of Rubicon Publishing's Weaving New Rhythms Diary, 2001, accompanied by a poem about dancing and music - a perfect poet ry partner for a former dancer's quilt, which she says, "was my response to the Caribana parade." That response was sketched with textiles and thread into a 35 1/2 by 39 inch quilt that not only reflects the expressive dancing of Caribana Photo by Christine Smyth Joyce Davies' Caribana quilt will be part of the Weaving participants, but animates the dancers with a vibrancy that only someone who loves dance and colour could do. "For some reason I don't think my eyes work well with pastels or black," quips Davies. Her quilt of many colours and many dancers can be seen and even purchased for $450 at the Weaving New Rhythms exhibition in the M cLaren-Bames Gallery from Sept. 17th to 30th. Other artists featured in the Weaving New Rhythms Diary, 2001 will also have fibre art in this unique exhibition, and many of those artists will be at the opening reception on Sunday, Sept. 17th from 1 to 4 p.m. in the soon-to-bedemolished gallery at 133 Reynolds St. Also, as part of the Oakville Festival for Fibre Arts, some of Davies' other quilts will be on view in the Omnium Gatherum exhibition in the Abbozzo Gallery, 179 Lakeshore Rd. E., from Sept. 22nd to Oct. 8th, along with the fibre art of other members of the Oakville Fibre Alliance (OFA). j Davies joined the OFA to share ideas with other textile artists and perhaps try some of the other textile disciplines. And the quilt artist con tinues to enjoy the camaraderie and the free flow o f ideas that the OFA has to offer. She also enjoys being part of the collective (See `Enjoys' on page B5) C h ristie festival o f ART & CRAFTS · Spectacular Fall show!
