Wednesday, August 9, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D1 Back to school pop quiz: Opening doors to "hidden jobs" with youth training program revitalized Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) will enable 2,000 students to begin apprenticeship training while com pleting high school. OYAP is a youth-focused apprenticeship training program that provides students with opportunities to become apprentices as part of their high school education. "A revitalized OYAP will help more high school students experience skilled trades first hand, and complements the Ministry's goal to broaden co-operative education opportunities through reform of the high school system," Minister of Education and Training Dave Johnson said. "Skilled trades are often called "hidden" jobs because they're per formed out of public view in factories or behind the kitchen doors of the restaurant. OYAP will open these doors to give high school students an appreciation of the great jobs skilled trades offer." OYAP will receive $1.4 million in new funding which will give it a total of $2 million annually to help district school boards create programs for high school students to begin to train for an apprenticeship while com pleting high school. The new support, and a new administrative structure, will enable school boards to double the number of students participating in the program from 1,000 to 2,000. Employers, unions, apprentices and educators called for greater sup port for OYAP during the consultation on apprenticeship reform. "A revitalized OYAP will mean more high school graduates will be entering the workforce with the skills employers need to compete in a global marketplace," Johnson said. "Strengthening this program meets one of my Ministry's commitments to reform the apprenticeship training system." OYAP has been in operation since 1989 with the participation of two thirds of school boards and a maximum enrolment of about 1,000 stu dents. With a few exceptions, local programs are dormant having not been able to sustain themselves with a one-time only start-up grant of $25,000. The new OYAP will provide support of up to $75,000 a year to district school boards, based on Ministry review of achievements. Ministry staff in apprenticeship offices will monitor the achievements of students in the program. OYAP is one of the programs offered by the Ministry of Education and Training through Youth Opportunities Ontario, the Ontario government's strategy for prorribting training and employment services for young people. - News Canada Are kids getting enough calcium? I t's almost school time. But as kids are in the classroom, it's parents who may need a lesson on calcium. According to a recent survey commissioned by The Minute Maid Company, only 10 percent of parents know how much calcium their kids need. Calcium is an important part of a healthy diet for kids, espe cially because the strength of adult bones is largely determined by the amount of calcium kids get by age 18. "It's no surprise kids aren't getting enough calcium,' said Molly Gee, registered dietician and mother. "And it's difficult to get kids to eat and drink calcium-rich foods, like milk and leafy green vegetables, espe cially when more meals are being eaten at school or on the way to soccer practice." In addition, the Minute Maid survey found parents think calcium-rich foods are unappetizing to their kids. Tofu, sardines and green leafy vegetables, like broccoli and spinach, topped the list of calcium-rich foods parents said their kids would call "yucky." To help parents give their kids a great tasting and natural way to get the calcium they need every day, Minute Maid® Premium Orange Tangerine Juice, a new, 100-percent juice product designed to appeal to kids' tastes, pro vides as much calcium per serving as milk, or 35 percent of the daily value of calcium. Orange Tangerine joins Minute Maid Premium Original Orange Juice with Calcium as the second juice in Minute Maid's calcisum-enriched line. Minute Maid also offers a convenient new option for kids on the go-calcium-foitified Minute Maid 100-percent juices in aseptic packages, in orange, apple, grape and cher ry varieties. All four juice-box flavors provide about 10 percent of a child's daily recommended calcium intake. If the back-to-school schedule makes it challenging to give your kids the calcium they need, here are tips for convenient, nutritious meals and snacks. Breakfast: Start the school week off right by eating break fast together on Monday mornings. To save time, keep it simple: cereal, milk, toast, butter, jam and Minute Maid Premium Orange Tangerine Juice. Lunch: Pack calcium-rich foods, such as yogurt, cal cium-fortified cereal bars, cottage cheese or calciumfortified Minute Maid 100-percent juices in aseptic packages in kids' lunches every day. This will help kids get enough calcium while away from home. Dinner: Reward kids for their healthy eating habits. Create a scoreboard and award points for vegeta bles, fruits, vitamins (including calcium) and low-fat snacks consumed. Prizes could include a week without chores, a fun family excursion or a backyard camp out. Snack: Designate one shelf of the refrigerator for after-school snacks, such as single-serve yogurt cups, pre cut cheese or calcium-fortified Minute Maid 100-percent juices in aseptic packages. Kids can help themselves to a daily dose of calcium.
