How reflector beam headlamps work Headlights on newer vehicles have a reflective cap that covers the bulb. Without the cap, the ambient forw ardlight generated by the bulb is unfocused and offers little usable luminosity. The cap reflects the wasted light rearward into the headlight `basket' which redirects the light, focussing it on the road ahead.
