Wednesday, January 19, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Be prepared for cold weather Cold temperatures, particular ly those below freezing, signifi cantly influence your car's perfor mance. A few common-sense preparations can protect your vehicle against harsh winter con ditions and avoid an untimely breakdown. Belts and hoses: Check all belts and hoses for signs of crack ing or wearing. If necessary, have them replaced. Motor oil: Make sure that you are using a multiviscosity motor oil. Multi viscosity motor oils are identified with a "W" in the viscosity grade designation; the "W" stands for winter. Always consult your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's recom mendation according to the tem peratures in your area. Antifreeze: Visually inspect the coolant level, as well as its color to check for dirt or rust. Also have the antifreeze concentration checked; most manufacturers rec ommend a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water, which provides protec tion to -37 °C. With the exception of some new vehicle systems, most vehicle owners should con sider flushing and changing their coolant once a year. Battery: Batteries, even new ones, will lose power in cold weather. When temperatures drop below freezing, a battery could lose as much as 15% of its starting power. Below zero, starting power is further reduced. A strong bat tery can help avoid problems. Tires: To insure that your vehicle's tires are prepared for potentially hazardous driving con ditions, visually inspect each tire to make sure it is properly inflated and that its treads are at least 1/4 of an inch deep. It might also be necessary to monitor tire pressure throughout the winter months, as cold temperatures tend to deflate tires. - We Do It Right For You!
