Wednesday, January 19, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 On the mark in Markham The Red Lobster Vikings from the Minor Oaks Hockey Association Atom Red House League were victorious in the 1999 Christmas Atom Select Tournament hosted by the Markham Waxers. The Vikings faced seven Atom Select teams from southwestern Ontario from Dec. 17th-29th. The first game of the tournament was against Ajax. The Vikings blew a 2-0 lead and despite a great comeback in the third period, lost the opener 4-3. Alan Goodhoofd was named MVP of the game. On the second day of the tournament, Oakville defeated the team from Stouffville 4-1 and then proceeded to defeat Richmond Hill 5-2. Strong defen sive efforts were displayed by Alex Clemmer, Brendan Farrer, Jeff Killip and Kyle Skinner with game MVP honours going to Skinner and Killip respectively. The two wins gave Oakville a first place finish in its division. In the championship semifinal on Dec. 29th, Oakville trailed the host team from Markham 2-0 after two periods of play. With just over seven minutes remaining in the third, Brian Richardson beat the Markham goalie on a breakaway to pull Oakville within one. Three minutes later, Alan Goodhoofd scored a power-play goal to tie the game. With just three minutes remaining and a face-off deep in the Markham zone, Richardson won the faceoff back to Robb Nelson who fired a low shot past the Markham goalie for the win. Oakville goalie, Mark Hinnon, had a strong performance and kept the Markham team off the scoreboard during the last few minutes to preserve the win. Nelson was named the game MVP. Rob Davies returned to the line-up from a previous day's injury with a solid performance. Oakville faced Richmond Hill in the championship game. Oakville tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal in the first period from Andrew Cormier, assisted by Peter Milway and Peter Pastirik. Once again, Oakville fell behind going into the final period, this time 3-1. Oakville's Jeff Killip scored two unanswered goals in a one minute span to tie the game at three. But with just three minutes remaining, Richmond Hill scored to take a 4-3 lead. Oakville's Rob Cooper tied the game 30 seconds later when he backhanded Nelson's rebound high into the net. Then with just 44 seconds remaining, Killip scored his third goal of the period to com plete his hat-trick by redirecting Andrew Cormier's shot past the Richmond Hill goaltender to win the game 5-4. Brian Richardson was named the tournament MVP. Chris Jacques was strong in both his offensive and defensive roles in the final game. r jt« P H ILTH Y 'S S P O T L IG H T : the Red Lobster Atom Red Vikings (1-r). Playing with a short bench, the 13 play ers available all turned exceptional efforts in playing five strong games. Oakville started out with the tie, 2-2 against St. George. Nathan Gilham opened the scoring but then Aaron Bradshaw sal vaged the tie with his goal. Assists went to Zack Carter and Reid Coughlin. After their first-game scare, the Oakville squad pounded the home side Barrie First Choice 12-3. Goals were scored by Nathan Gilham (3), Zack Carter (3), Brent Spivak (2), Josh Poirer (2), Andrew Moorehead and Charlie Long. Assists went to Nathan Gilham (5), Brent Spivak (4), Mike Nadorozny (2), Josh Poirier (2), Zack Carter, Colin Asselstine, Aaron Bradshaw and Andrew Moorehead. Although virtually assured of a playoff spot, the Wranglers made no mistake by winning their division early with a hard fought 2-1 win over previously undefeated Barrie Swimwear. Oakville opened the scoring on a goal by Josh Poirier. After Barrie evened things up, Aaron Bradshaw scored the clincher with just 2:14 left to play. Charlie Long had an assist. Oakville started slowly in their semifi nal game, lucky to be down only 1-0 thanks to some great goaltending by Doug Csima, but then took command for a 6-2 win. Goals were scored by Brent Spivak (2), Josh Poirier, Mike Nadorozny, Zack Carter and Charlie Long. The final was an out-of-town affair with the Wranglers taking on Oshawa Christchurch. Both teams had identical 30-1 records with Oshawa outscoring their opponents 20-5. Things didn't look good for the Oakville side with Oshawa scoring on their first shift, however, Oakville tied it up with just over a minute remaining in the first frame. The second period was more of the same with both teams settling for a 3-3 draw. Oakville managed to score two unan swered third period goals, however, to earn the win and the championship. While any of the team could have been considered for selection Brent Spivak got the nod as Wrangler MVP. Goals were scored by Brent Spivak (2), Josh Poirier (2) and Nathan Gilham. Assists went to Gilham, Charlie Long, Zack Carter and Colin Asselstine.
