'Bridal Showcase Monday April 10, 2000 7:00 p.m. Otis bringing the internet into elevators By Nancy Alexander SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Imagine stepping into your office elevator at the end of the workday and getting a complete update on weather, traffic and stock reports before you hit the lobby. Stay tuned. It may soon be com ing to an elevator near you. Otis Elevator Company, with Canadian headquarters in Oakville, has announced plans to bring the internet right into its elevator cars. Joining forces with Next Generation Network (NGN) and IBM Corp., Otis intends to begin providing a broad range of internetbased content to elevator passen gers, including world, national and local news, local weather, traffic reports, sports scores and building information. The new service, known as e*Display, will be integrated into new models of Otis elevators start ing this year and will also be avail able as an equipment upgrade onto existing elevators. Initially, Otis is targeting New York, Paris and Sydney (host of the 2000 Olympic Games) as the immediate launch sites of the new venture. Cities such as Toronto, as well as other major U.S. and European markets will follow in the second quarter of the year. The e*Display service features a flat-panel screen installed inside the elevator car. The screen will feature internet-based, full-motion, fullcolour displays of information that change every five to ten seconds. The e*Display screen also opens up a potential new advertis ing channel. Otis and NGN are already in active negotiations with advertisers who want to reach some of the hundreds of millions of peo ple who spend part of each day rid ing an Otis elevator. In addition to the e*Display ser vice, Otis is creating two additional internet-based services: e*Direct and e*Service. The first, e*Direct, will allow new equipment customers to speci fy and eventually order their eleva tors and escalators on-line. The sec ond, e*Service, will enable Otis customers to monitor the perfor mance or check on the service schedule of their elevators and escalators on-line. Otis currently services 1.2 mil lion elevators worldwide. While technically, each one of these units is a potential candidate for the e*Display technology, the initial focus will be on the urban, medium-and-high-rise market segments, representing about 20 percent of that number, where sponsorship revenues are more likely to offset installation costs. For smaller markets or towerrise buildings, representing approx imately another 50 percent of the market, e*Display will eventually be sold on a subscription basis, as a service to the building owner. And how much will it cost to go high-tech with your building's ele vators? Otis says pricing for the e*Display service hasn't been final ized yet, but the company antici pates there will be a fee for initial installation, as well as a monthly fee for service. The latter may be waived in active advertising mar kets where the building owner wishes to share in some portion of the revenue generated by the e*Display service.
