The Seaway Trail offers leisurely travel along well-marked roads, passing com m unities, farm lands, harbors and fishing ports. Along the way there are fields, forests, wetlands and sand dunes; family attractions; fine and casual dining opportunities; shopping; and overnight accommodations that include hotels, cot tages, campgrounds, and bed and break fast inns. Start the tour about 25 miles south west o f the western end o f the trail at the Jamestown Audubon Nature Center in Jamestown. The interpretive building, nam ed for noted ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson, features avian exhibits and a discovery room for kids. Outside, you'll find a 60-tree arboretum and herb garden. There is a special nature show held the third week o f October. In Dunkirk, about 60 miles north o f Jam estown, visit the Canadaway Creek Nature Sanctuary. O w ned and managed by the N ature Conservancy. N ext, follow the Seaway Trail (on Route 5) northeast to Buffalo. Stop in at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. Designed by Frederick Law O lm sted, the B otanical G ardens Conservancy was built in the late 1890s and is listed on the National Registries o f Historic Places. W ithin the 11 acres is a 67-foot dom e with a magnificent palm collection, skywalk, waterfalls, cactus house, orchids, tropical flowers, edible fruit house and children's learning gar den. From here, follow the Seaway Trail signs north to the Robert Moses Parkway and Niagara Falls. You might want to take the over-walk from Prospect Park, near the Niagara Reservation State Park, to Goat Island to experience the grandeur o f the falls. Continue along the Seaway Trail on the Robert Moses Parkway and Route 18 to many state park sites, such as Whirlpool State Park and Devil's Hole State Park. Follow the Seaway Trail going north on Route 18F to Lake Road (Route 18 east), then turn right onto Route 63 and drive south about 16 miles (passing Medina) to the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge on Casey Road. Return north to Route 18, then take the Lake Ontario Parkway to Rochester. In Rochester, visit Highland Park, a 150-acre county park designed by Olmsted in 1888 as Rochester's first park. A tree garden, or planned arboretum, the park boasts a Japanese maple collection. Head back to the Seaway Trail and stop at Selkirk Shores State Park on Route 3, which is brimming with woodland flowers, ferns, mosses and sand dune plants. Also along Route 3 is Southwick Beach State Park, a 682-acre park with a natural sandy swimming beach and a dune walkover bridge that protects the delicate ecosystem. From here, follow the Seaway Trail northeast along Lake Ontario. In Sackets Harbor, visit the Seaway Trail Discovery Center. The center contains nine rooms of exhibits, including an orientation room with 10 varieties of recognizable tree leaves and 16 bird varieties in wall murals. Murals depict outdoors along the shore line on a perfect, bright day. From Sackets Harbor, drive east along Route 12 and Route 37 to Massena, where you'll see the Dwight D. Eisenhower Lock, one of the most popular locks in the St. Lawrence Seaway. Here ships as long as 730 feet from throughout the world pass through as they traverse the the Seaway.
