Friday, August 11, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER West Nile Virus watch mmmmmmmimi iU o n i A D IN 11 ncj -- JO SH A CREEK TR G-- 5 R esid en ts asked to report dead bird findings Oakville residents are asked to contact the Halton Region Health Department if they find any dead wild birds. This will help the health depart ment monitor any occurrence and progression of the West Nile Virus into Halton. Any reported birds will be assessed by a Health Inspector and, if necessary, will be submitted to the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre in Guelph for testing. The West Nile Virus usually affects birds such as crows, jays, English sparrows and various waterbirds, but can be spread by mosquitoes to animals and people. Most infected persons have no symptoms or develop a mild illness such as fever, headache or body aches. Some persons develop a mild rash or swollen lymph glands. Only a small number of cases, especially the elderly, develop encephalitis. As a precautionary measure, the Region is advising Halton residents to take personal protective mea sures against mosquitoes when out doors, such as: - Wearing light-coloured with full-length pant legs and sleeves. - Use insect repellent containing 20-35% DEET (diethyltoluamide) on exposed skin (repellents con taining DEET are not recommend ed for use in children under the age of two). - Reducing outdoor activities in the evening. In addition, residents are advised to control mosquitoes around their homes by: - Reducing or eliminating mos quito breeding areas such as stand ing water. - Removing debris (eg. tin cans, bottles) that hold water. - Cleaning eaves and down spouts. - Removing dense shrubbery and weeds. - Immediately throw away lawn cuttings, raked leaves and other decaying items such as apples or benries that fall from trees. Place them in sealed garbage bags. - Turn over compost piles on a regular basis. - Fill in any low depression areas in lawns. - Remove areas such as dense shrubbery where mosquitoes breed and rest. - Let your neighbours know about potential mosquito breeding grounds on their property. For further information about the West Nile Virus and ways to protect yourself against mosquitoes call the Halton Region Health Department at 825-6060 or visit their website at www.halton.region.on.ca/health.
