Friday, August 11,2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 37 Angels gear u p for provincial cham pionship w ith tourney w in in W hitby The Oakville Angels mite rep softball team came hom e with the gold medal from the Whitby tier II tournament over the July 21-23 w eekend. This is a great accom plishm ent, considering it is the first year that the O akville Girls Softball A ssociation (O G SA ) has had a team represented at this age group (8 to 10-year-olds) at this level o f ball. The A n gels opened with a 23-8 win in their opening gam e against the Ajax Raiders. After a slow start and the gam e tied after tw o innings o f play, the A n g els' bats cam e alive in the third. Kirsty Grant was solid at the plate going 4 for 4 (2 singles, 1 triple, 1 home run), Jaime Bako 3 for 3 (2 triples, 1 single). H olly L eem ing with tw o triples and Sarah Curry with a so lo home run. Solid base running by Sam D avid and Amanda Finch. Rounding out the game was Jaime (J.J.) Johns who earned M VP for her solid catching and relief pitching. The A ngels dropped their second game 20-13 to an aggressive Brampton Blazers. With a tough schedule for the day, playing back to back gam es, the A ngels kept up with their opponents' pace until the third when they ran out o f steam, givin g up 12 runs. M VP went to A lex Pecar who show ed great agility in centre field throughout the game. Game three saw O akville once again paired up with the Ajax Raiders. This game was a bet ter match o f skill but O akville still prevailed 1410. H olly Leem ing went 2 for 2 (1 triple, 1 sin gle) and great base running by Sam Davis, Leslie-A nn W hitcomb and A lex Pecar. M VP was awarded to Jessica Duncan for her outstanding defensive play at shortstop. The final round robin gam e on Sunday against Brampton was a tune-up since both teams had already qualified for the cham pi onship game at noon. Both teams played well with Brampton w in ning 20-9. J.J. Johns was 2 for 2 and Emily Quinn won M VP for her outstanding catching and relief pitching. With the round-robin out o f the way, O akville and Brampton went back at it again, only this time with everything on the line. After two defeats at the hands o f Brampton, O akville couldn't have picked a better time to turn things around, blasting Brampton 21-5. The bats exploded as Leslie-A nn W hitcomb went 3 for 3 (3 singles) and A lex Pecar 3 for 4 (2 triples, I single). The fifth inning ended the gam e with O akville scoring 11 runs. A w esom e pitching by H olly Leem ing who went the distance recording II strikeouts and picking up M VP honours. With the win, the A ngels ended their tourna ment season on a high note. The team is gearing up for the provincial championship tournament in Aurora this w eek end (Aug. 11-13th). In the prelim inary round, O akville played a solid gam e against Welland, tak ing the c lo se fought contest, 5-1. N ext up w ere the Newm arket Hawks w ho put on a determ ined effort against the A's with solid pitching and excellen t hit ting. But the A's kept clo se in the early goin g only to pull away at the end o f the gam e to win 7-3. T he T oronto G reen w ood w ere no match for the red hot A's in gam e three as O akville disposed o f their opponents in four and a h alf innings, 14-2. The A's pitching staff garnered game M V P awards from the opposition during the tournament. The Oakville A's major mosquito rep baseball team put in a strong perfor mance at the Silver Bat Tournament in N ewm arket last weekend. After goin g undefeated in preliminary round action, the A's handed the Toronto Playground a solid 8-1 defeat in the sem i final to advance to the cham pionship gam e against the M ississau ga Tigers. O akville got o ff to a shaky start d efen sively and were staring dow n the barrel o f an 8-1 rout by the T igers after the first inning. But the gritty A's rose to the chal len ge and m ounted a determ ined co m e back. Led by pitcher Paul Jurgaitis, the A's defence sw itched into high gear, contain ing the Tigers throughout the next six innings. The A's launched a `no holds barred' offen sive attack on the Tigers' pitching staff with every player hitting su ccessfu l ly and forcing the play at every turn o f the gam e. O akville now advances to the League Cup sem ifinal in H am ilton, Aug. 19. · It was a patented Jennifer Pitken dash that set up the goal as she ran dow n a long ball from Brook Johnson and man aged a cross into tj}ejx>x under pressure. After a couple o f E xplosion players had sw ipes, Pelham cleared but Lisa Telebar push ing up from full back, seized the ball and launched a shot from two yards outside the box to score the eventual winner in the 55th minute. And not a m om ent too soon as the gam e had to be called 14 m in utes later as the skies opened and lightning flashed. But all gam es are official after 55 minutes. Jessica Turner was a tiger in an unusual role as central defender, w ith'slide tackles, powerful headers and blasting clear ances.
