Friday, August 11, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 33 Icelight: an Inuit video exhibit Icelight, an exh ib ition that opened the w eekend o f July 29 at O ak ville G alleries in G airloch G ardens, brings together a se le c tion o f o rigin al v id e o tapes produced by Ig lo o lik Isum a P rod u ction s and A rnait Ikkajurtigiit (th e W om en's V ideo W orkshop). B oth groups are hou sed in the Tariagsuk V ideo Centre, a non-profit arts organization incorporated in 1990/91. T h ese groups have d evelop ed productions from the Inuit p o in t-o f-v ie w in their ow n language and style for both Inuit and non-Inuit aud ien ces. In an effort to represent and preserve their history and culture, they work outside the constraints o f both com m ercial and o fficia l "pu blic" broadcasting to speak to their ow n v ision . U sin g artist-centered approaches to tech nology, this work has been introduced to the contem porary art world in an attempt to im prove the w ays Inuit p eop le are represented in the media w orldw ide. In digen ous cultural representation for these men and w om en is not sim p ly a matter o f m ulticulturalism . Their language and culture m ust be enhanced in a w ay that w ill led to econ om ic develop m en t and, consequ en tly, political control over their land and their future. B y keeping the old w ays a live and resisting the h om ogen ized in flu en ces o f the dom inant culture, the video tapes in the Icelight exhibition lay the groundwork for advance ment. Igloolik Isum a Productions and Arnait Ikkajurtigiit work in and around Igloolik , Nunavut, in the eastern A rctic. Igloolik is a settlem ent about 3,4 0 0 km north o f M ontreal w ith approxi m ately 1,200 people, o f w hich all but 5 0 are Inuit. The known history o f its people g o e s back over 4 ,0 0 0 years, desp ite only 35 years at its current location. Icelight is co-curated by P eggy G ale, curator o f the visual arts section o f the M ontreal B iennial 200 0 , and Su Ditta, adjunct curator o f m edia arts with O akville G alleries. The vid eo exhibit w ill continue in the gallery at 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E. until Sept. 17th. The gallery is open from 1 to 5 p.m ., T uesdays to Sundays, and adm ission is free. An exhibition book let with an essay by Ditta, and a detailed program notes w ill be available at O akville G alleries in con junction with the exhibit. A discu ssion with G ale w ill take place on Friday, Sept. 15th at 3 p.m ., fo llo w ed by a c losin g reception at 5 p.m . in G airloch Gardens. For more details, call 8 4 4 -4402.
