Friday, August 11,2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 31 Jazz Festival: new location, new repertoire The Oakville Jazz and Bluesfest, presented by the Oakville Entertain ment Centrum (OEC), a PenEquity property, and Ford of Canada, will deliver live jazz and blues from Fri day, Aug. 25th to Sunday, Aug. 27th. Jim Galloway, artistic director for the festival, says the three-day event promises to be the best yet. "I am really excited about the line up this year. It features excellent inter national talent as well as some of thg very best performers that we have locally," says G allow ay, who has added blues for the first time in the festival's eight-year history. "Blues has often been aligned with jazz. The two are a good blend and (when) care fully programmed, they appeal to a huge range of music lovers." The festival will open at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25th with the popular local blues group, Brian Colour Blind Blaine Blues Band. M ississippi Heat, led by harpist Pierre Larocque, will follow with its classic Chicago blues sound at 9 p.m. Bassist Christian McBride, the fes tival headliner, will perform on the OEC's Lincoln LS Stage on Saturday, Aug. 26th. McBride, who has several CDs to his credit, says o f his latest album, A Family Affair: "More than anything, I would like to pull in some young fans with this album, so we can show them what they've been missing out on." Opening for McBride at 7 p.m. will be the Duncan Hopkins Quintet, who wowed audiences at the DuMaurier Downtown Jazz Festival in Toronto this summer with a mix of standard and original contemporary music. At 6 p.m. Saturday, New York City trumpeter Spanky Davis and sax play er Jim Galloway will lead a quintet of musicians with a blend of Davis's mainstream swing sounds and Gal loway's "fundamental" jazz sounds. Young jazz singer Alex Pangman will be featured on Sunday, as will the Toronto All Star Big Band. The Oakville Entertainment Cen trum, located off Winston Churchill Boulevard just north of the QEW, will provide five acres of landscaped park land as well as lots of free parking for folks who are ready to enjoy some hot jazz and cool blues during the threeday festival at the OEC. Festival-goers will be able to enjoy a variety of refreshments in the fully licensed jazz park and the surrounding restaurants. A Centrum Gold Pass for the three days is available for $5, with proceeds going to support a local charity as well as future live jazz performances in Oakville. Every other year, the money raised through the workshops goes to the two Oakville seniors' centres. "This year we made more money (than past years). It was in Oakville. We always split the money between the two centres," says Canham. As for the 12th annual Royal Bank Seniors' Jubilee, it will feature 1,300 performers in Roy Thomson Hall from Aug. 14th to 18th. Other Oakville par ticipants will include comedian Jim Bibby, the Celtic C loggers w ith Shirley and Doug McConnell, Eliza beth Clarke, the Happy Tappers, the Kerr Street Big Band, Frank King, and Gloria Saarinen. This year Bibby, who was featured in the Oakville Beaver last year for his long-time participation in this annual event, will receive the Pauline M cGibbon Life Achievem ent in the Arts Award. This prestigious award, estab lished in 1991, acknow ledges the achievements o f a senior perform er (or group) who has made a significant contribution to society through the arts. As always, the Jubilee will present a different lineup each day, featuring singers, dancers, musicians, bands, magicians, vaudevillians, and story tellers plus a few surprise acts - some entertaining in the lobby at 11 a.m., others on the main stage beginning at 1 p.m. This year a draw for a 10-day trip for two to England will be fea tured along with daily door prizes dur ing the lobby entertainment.
