Photo by Barrie Erskine Susan Johnson and Edythe Canham practise for their per'" 'formajice at the Seniors' Jubilee on Aug. 18th These two Oakville doggers are part of this year's Royal Bank Seniors' Jubilee and will be struttin' their stuff on the stage of Roy Thomson Hall on Aug. 18th. Although they are the sole mem bers of the Oak-Town Steppers - a spin-off group of the Rockin' Rain bow Cloggers, they are hoping the advanced clogging group will grow to at least six by the end of the year. "It was to give the whole group a challenge if they wanted it - to dance solo or in couples, or threes or fours," Canham explains. "The dances are harder." So far, though, Canham and John son are the only ones who have taken up the challenge. But these two pros, who both teach clogging, are confident in their dancing skills and not the least bit nervous about doing a duet at the Seniors' Jubilee. Johnson, who is a beginner when it comes to teaching, is currently working towards her instructor's cer tificate. Canham, on the other hand, was a majorette with the Tiger Cats many years ago and has done round dancing, square dancing and line dancing. She also clogged for 10 years before she began dancing her way into the hearts, and feet, of wannabe cloggers almost 10 years ago, beginning with a large class of students aged 15 and up through the Parks and Recreation Department. Shortly after that, she decided to give the over-fifty set a decided advantage by teaching exclusively at both seniors' centres in Oakville. "It was something I always want ed to do," she says, explaining that she only began dancing and teaching in earnest after retiring from her job at Dofasco in 1991. And it was Canham who got Johnson hooked on the boisterous dancing that is sometimes confused with tap dancing. Canham, quick to set the record straight, says clogging is a freer style. "You can be yourself. You can scream; you can yell; you can dance by yourself or with a group. It's not as prissy as tap dancing," she explains. "You don't always have to dance on the ball of your foot. You don't have to be up on your toes. Actually, you bend your knees and pull your toes up." She and Johnson will be pulling their toes up an awful lot during their Jubilee performance, since the directors of the show didn't want any repeat routines, says Canham, and "they don't want us to have our backs to the audience, and they want us to fly all over the stage," she says, admitting that covering the entire stage is more challenging for a duet than for a larger dance group. How ever, the challenge doesn't faze these two seniors, who even created their own costumes for the occasion. The Oak-Town Steppers and the Rockin' Rainbow Cloggers can also be seen displaying their dancing tal ents at the Sir John Colborne Recre ation Centre for Seniors, 1565 Old Lakeshore Rd., during an Open House on Sept. 8th. Their demon stration will begin at 10:30 a.m. "And w e're doing a workshop at the Kerr Street Centre (263 Kerr St.) on Sept. 7th, where people can join in and do the dancing," adds Can ham. Both Oakville clogging groups are always looking for new mem bers. Anyone aged 50 and over who is interested in clogging is invited to call Canham at 847-8035. "The class has grown. I started out with eight dancers and it's grown to three classes - beginners, basic and intermediate. And we have a class o f 20 beginners in M issis sauga," she says, adding that the fee for lessons is minimal. "I held a summer class this year, which cost $34 for eight lessons of an hour-anda-half each. And that's all levels."
