The sport utility market continues to boom despite the recent upward blip in oil prices. Overall, sport ute sales were up 13% - truck sales still outpacing cars. And the sport utility market is a varied market, the luxury, fullsize and compact segments fragmenting even further with the advent of "sportcutes", car-truck hybrids and even crew cab pickup trucks. Through it all, Nissan's Pathfinder remains Canada's favorite compact import SUV. It's rugged persona and no-nonsense, trucky styling has been a long-standing hit with the off-road crowd. All it really need ed was an engine. After exterior re-styling last year, the 2001 Pathfinder debuts with a new engine, new interior and new fea tures. First and foremost - the new engine. I'd already sampled this new 3.5 L V6 in the Pathfinder's upscale cousin, the Infiniti QX4. Based on the Maxima's award-win ning V6, the VQ35DE engine is no less impressive in the Pathfinder, nudging Nissan's sport ute from the bottom rung of the power ladder up to the very heights - its 250 hp (240 hp in the automatic version) numbers comparable to and even beating some of the competition's V8s. Nissan cheats a little here by bumping the highcompression engine's fuel requirements up to premium octane levels. But if you can live with a little power loss, you can still use regular gas. The new engine is lighter and stronger, the almost fifty percent power increase over the old engine accomplished courtesy of a long list of improvements - some of them include 4-va!ves-per-cylinder, vari able-valve timing and a variable intake sys tem. The all-aluminum engine with small er lighter pistons sheds 16 kg of weight 0100 km ratings have dropped by two sec onds to very untruck-like times of 8-9 sec onds, depending on tranny selection. Three trim levels are available - XE, SE and LE. A base model, manual transmis sion XE starts the ball rolling at $34,700 while a top-of-the-line LE maxxes out the price at $44,300. You can mix and match options and pack ages in between those prices. Some of the features include a BOSE 6 Disc-in-Dash CD chang er, steering wheel audio switches, sunroof, leather packages and memory seats.
