Teachers unions have not responded to this offer. There's also the provincial funding formula, which could require boards to ask secondary teachers to handle seven classes per year instead of six. The extra class requirement was staunchly opposed by teachers in 1998 contract talks, who noted it would increase work and cut preparation time. "Workload is a major issue, period, while the extracurricular requirement is still a bit up in the air," said Chud. "Compensation is going to be an issue as well. Teachers haven't had a raise in seven or eight years." He noted teachers have dealt with many issues recently, such as the chang ing high school curriculum. `Teachers young and old want some calm," said Chud. "It has been a very dif ficult couple of years."
