This summer Michael has given two books to Brian to read and discuss at the end of the sum mer. He also helped him get involved in soccer. "I always thought of Big Brothers as positive," explained Johnson of his decision, to choose this organization. "It's very rewarding. I have as good a time as he does. We do the Ontario Science Centre, the zoo . . . cook ing, things he hasn't experienced. "We went and saw the movie `Dinosaur' before it opened so he was able to tell his friends." A very important aspect as far as Johnson is concerned, is letting Brian see him interact with his fiancee and family. "He has a nonexistent family, so he's seeing what the potential is outside his environment. He understands what a family can be." Both Johnson and Greene say that being a Big Brother is not as big a commitment as people may think. "I don't think of it as a seri ous commitment, other than get ting a new friend," said Johnson. But it's not a good choice for men who are unable to make time for a little brother. "If you're not a responsible per son, don't do it," said Greene. Currently in Oakville there are 44 Big Brother matches, and 25 to 30 boys on the waiting list. To help some of these boys on the waiting list, there is an in-school program and a group program, where eight boys are matched with two leaders. "We need Big Brothers," said Shepherd. "People are surprised by how easily a relationship fits into their day. If you're meeting a little brother once every two weeks, it can have a tremendous impact" For men interested in becoming Big Brothers, the process takes about six weeks. There is an appli cation package, references are checked, and there is a police clearance. Once these checks are completed, there are interviews with a caseworker. Three boys are chosen and the potential Big Brother chooses one. The mother gets to meet the Big Brother first and if all goes well, the match is made. Little brothers range in age from six to 16, and come from father-absent homes. "They are wonderful boys who are interested in going to the park and playing road hockey," said Shepherd. "You don't have to do extravagant things." "It's so rewarding if you follow through," said Greene. "The best thing would be for Tim to be a Big Brother one day, and pass it on."
