Stewart, who is president of Avenue Innovations Inc., was having great dif ficulty getting in and out of cars after several knee surgeries. Necessity being the mother of invention, he came up with a solution that is now enjoying brisk sales across Canada. The Handy Bar is a surprisingly simple design that works very effec tively as an aid in getting in and out of a car on either side. Consisting of a strong, molded, stainless steel shaft and a soft, non-slip handle, the patented device is shaped to fit into a car's existing door latch, which then acts as a firm support in helping you up and out of the car. The aid has proven particularly popular with seniors with mobility problems who are still eager to stay behind the wheel. People who see it tend to w ant i t " The Handy Bar has a universal design which fits most North Ameri can and Japanese vehicles. Its compact size allows it to be stored easily in the glove compartment (or even a purse) for handy access. Stewart, who now lives and manu factures his product in British Colum bia, says he receives a lot of testimoni al letters from grateful seniors who now find greater ease and safety in getting in and out of their vehicles. "We've worked with hospitals, chi ropractors, physiotherapists, occupa tional therapists, you name it," says Stewart. `T hey all think it's a great device." The product retails for $35 and is being sold at MediChair outlets across Canada. Stewart is also working with car manufacturers to try to have the Handy Bar made available at dealer ships as well. "It took us about a year to refine it and get it to market," says Stewart. "But now it's really starting to catch on. I think we may have a bit o f a slinky on our hands. People who see it tend to want it." The Handy Bar is but one of-about 16 inventions Stewart currently has on the go, and he credits his wonky knees (and years on the soccer field) for the inspiration. "You know, I used to work at a car dealership," he told the Beaver. "And it made me aware of the number of people who have difficulty getting out of their cars. I figured there had to be a way to make it easier for them." Anyone wishing more information * about the Handy Bar can call the toll free number 1-888-738-0611.
