A. Blakelock Coincidence says health official By Scott M acA rthir SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For the second time in less than a month, tuber culosis (TB) has afflicted another student at T.A. Blakelock High School. Halton Region received confirmation Tuesday after noon (July 19th) from the infected student's physician. Kathy Blake, Acting Manager of Communicable Disease Control Services, however, believes at this point that the two cases are completely unrelated. "I would say as of right now the two cases are coinci dental," said Blake, noting that she did not believe the latest individual was tested in mid-June when the Health Department held a clinic at the school. "I don't believe there is a link between the two." The Health Department is currently taking numerous steps to address the situation. Letters to physicians, stu dents, staff and the parents of students who attended school with the second affected person have been sent out to inform them of actions that need to be taken. It is recommended, for example, that all students and staff at Blakelock be tested for TB to ensure there are no other people infected. Tuberculin skin testing clinics are also being held at the Halton Regional Administration Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd. for Blakelock students and staff. This is a two-step process that requires those tested to return two days later for results. Dates and times are as follows, based on year of birth: 1985, Wednesday, July 26th between 2 and 7 p.m. Tests will be checked on Friday, July 28th between 2 and 5 p.m. 1984, Friday, July 28th between 2 and 5 p.m. Tests will be checked on Monday, July 31st between 2 and 7 p.m. 1983, Monday, July 31st between 2 and 7 p.m. (See `TB' page 3) Photo by Peter C. B ig B r o th e r s o f th e Y e a r Relationship generates Big and Little rewards By Shelly Sanders Greer SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER W hen Oakville resident Shawn Greene, 31, was a child, his father passed away and he went on to develop a relationship with a `Big Brother.' Now, as an adult, he is giving back what he received, as a Big Brother himself to a 15-year-old boy named Tim for the past four years. "Friendship, learning parental responsibility. . . . there are so many rewards it's hard to describe," said Greene when asked about the rewards of being a Big Brother. Greene, along with fellow Big Brother Michael Johnson, 29, are this year's Big Brothers of the Year. Lee Shepherd, a caseworker and acting executive director of the Big Brothers of Halton, said both are very deserving of this important award. "At the awards, Tim's mother wrote a letter stating that for their family, Shawn has been an angel," said Shepherd. "This family has dealt with two losses and Shawn has helped them, even acting as a pallbearer." Shepherd matched Johnson to his little brother, Brian, more than four years ago. " M ichael has gone above and b ey o n d o ur ex p ectatio n s," she said.
