Tournament raises $169,000 for United Way Mattamy Homes gave new meaning to "building a better community" on Thursday, at the Mayor's Invitation Softball Tournament which raised a record-breaking $169,000 gross for the United Way of oakville. This represented a $60,000 increase from last year> Rand Worldwide won the tournament by defeating Ballantry Homes 3-2 in semi-final action and Tridel Corporation 6-1 in the finals.Their win ended Mattamy's two-year reign as champions. Tournament co-chairs Peter Gilgan, President and CEO of Mattamy Homes, and Walt Jurgen, Associate Broker for Royal LePage, surpassed their $150,000 fundraising goal by expanding the tournament field from 18 to 24 teams and doubling corporate sponsorships. Platinum spon sors included Alice Fazooli's, Bruno's, Central Fairbank Lumber, Enbridge' Consumers Gas, Greenpark, Jennifer's Kitchen, Lansing Buildall, Molson Breweries, Niran Construction, Norman Hill Realty and the Toronto Star. Proceeds from the Mayor's Invitational Softball Tournament will go directly to the United Way of Oakville and its 39 agency orga nizations. One in three Oakville residents are aided by United Way agencies each year. It's a close call, but This Ballantry Homes baserunner is out at first in semi-final action against Rand Worldwide.
