16 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, August 20, 2000 wins The Oakville Explosion U-14 girls rep team took a pair of games from North Mississauga Tigers on August IOth and 14th. Oakville won the first game 2-0. Sara Hay, playing her best game of the year, opened the scoring with a head er from a Brooke Johnson comer in the 15th minute. Call-up Stephanie Allport added to the total seven min utes later, picking the comer in traffic. In the second game, the Explosion's Mighty Mouse, Tanya Dias, led the way with the first and last goals in a 3-1 win. In between, the Explosion had a great many chances, but only Jennifer Pitkin could add to the total with a lovely chip over the onrushing North \Jjssissauga keeper after breaking the trap from a through pass from Brooke. North Mississauga got a goal back with four minutes left with Explosion all playing unfamiliar positions. Red Devils m ove on in O ntario C u p ... The Oakville Red Devils U-12 rep team of the South Region Soccer League (SRSL) premier divi sion are moving on to the Ontario Cup semifinals after withstanding a spirited challenge from North Mississauga who play in the SRLS first division. Oakville opened the scoring on a turn-around kick by Junior Hoilett but North Mississauga man aged to even it up and continue with the pressure, including two glorious opportunities, one late in the first half that was only thwarted by a last minute clearance off the line by Robert Meinert, and one early in the second half that just slid past the post. Oakville did manage to turn the tide and gener ate their own chances and this paid off 15 minutes into the second half with Matt Bandy converting a Hoilett pass. A relieved Oakville side settled down and just four minutes later a lovely series of moves resulted in the insurance marker by Tremayne Leach as he booted a 10-yarder past a desperately diving goalie. A good lesson was learned: never under esti mate a lower division opponent. Now, it's on to the exciting Ontario Cup semifi nals on August 26th at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium against Ottawa St Anthony or Glen Shields. LEAGUE CUP The Red Devils came out flying in SRSL League Cup quarterfinal action against Premier Division rivals Brampton and were three goals up in the first nine minutes en route to a 4-1 win.
