Canada will send a total of 309 athletes with Ontario's contingent o f 111 representing about 36 per cent o f that total -- the same percentage as the 1996 Atlanta contingent. Ontario will also chip in 34 coaches. O akville's contingent includes: · defending O lym pic 100m and 4x100m champion Donovan Bailey, 32 · Oakville Trafalgar student Andrew Hurd, who just turned 18, in the 1500m swim event · and rower Chris Davidson, 28, in light weight coxless fours. A t the last O lym pics in A tlanta in `96 Oakville boasted a four-member contingent, led by Donovan Bailey and including canoeist Gavin Maxwell, boxer Dominic Filane and cyclist Eric Wohlberg. And actually Wohlberg is also going back for a second consecutive Olympics but the Northern Ontario native has since moved to Burlington from Oakville. Filane, a 10-time Canadian boxing champion in the light flyweight class (106 pounds, or 48 kilos, if you prefer), was in the running to make his third Olympic games. He secured Canada's Olympic berth in his division but could not make it out of the regional qualifier (which included the Americas). Maxwell did not contest a spot at the Sydney Olympics. Majors defeat host Kanata 9-0 The August long weekend saw the Oakville Little League major all-star team head off to the 5th Annual Scott Tokessy Memorial Tournament to try and win it for an impressive third time, having already won it in the Minor A and Major B divisions. They did not disappoint as they defeated the host Kanata team 9-0 in the presti gious Major A championship. v It was an impressive display of the kind of baseball which this team has become known for -- great pitching, stellar defence, speed and clutch hitting. In the preliminary rounds, Oakville defeated East Nepean 3-1, Orleans 5-0 and Knapp Station (NY) 13-3. The toughest game of the tournament came in the semifi nal against a hard hitting team from Massena, NY. The see-saw battle ended with Oakville winning the game 7-6 in extra innings, squeezing in the winning ran in the seventh inning. ... Minors blast High Park 10-1 Baseball teams enjoy tournaments. It gives them the opportunity to test their skills, against teams they haven't played before. The Scott Tokessy Memorial Tournament in Kanata, which was held this year over the Aug. 4-6th weekend, is a special one. It commemorates a young Little Leaguer who collapsed and died after hitting a home run. His death was due to an irregular heartbeat. So it was a happy bunch of Oakville Little League Minors (11 years) who, after winning their first two games of the tournament against Massena, N.Y. (4-0) and Kanata (11-0), knew that they would be in the final for the Scott Tokessy Memorial jackets. Wouldn't you know, though, that the title game would be against Oakville's nemesis High Park, who were just itch ing to get back at the Minors for two early season defeats Oakville hung on them. But Oakville persevered to make it three in a row, 10-1. With pitchers allowed only two innings in each game, it all came down to who had the most and better hurlers. Starter A.J. O'Brodovich adroitly kept the Parkers off the score sheet in his stint. Meanwhile, Scott DeGroot's double, Alden Black's single and Ryan Mallough's sacrifice/RBI scored DeGroot for a 1-0 lead after two. That lead stood up until the fourth inning when a weird play went in Oakville's favour and turned the game around. Daniel Keresteci was caught in an extended run down between third and home when Chris Stewart decided to leave his perch on second and head to third. This apparently distracted the third baseman as he dropped the ball, allow ing Keresteci to make it home with the second (and, ultimately, winning) run. Oakville brought in two more runs that inning for a 4-0 lead -- Stewart scoring on Roger Lambert's sacrifice, and Downer on Scott DeGroot's single. With Stewart holding High Park scoreless for his two inning stint, the Minors jumped on a new High Park pitcher in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-0. Adam Davidson, - Marko Dordevic, Sergio Lujan and Alex Camall all had singles; RBI's were recorded by Camall (2), Dordeviif; Lujan and Keresteci; and runs were scored by Mallough, Davidson, Patch Channing and Dordevic. High Park got one back in their half of the fifth, but the Minors in the top of the sixth added two more runs on a sin gle by O'Brodovich, scoring Lambert who had walked, who in turn scored on DeGroot's RBI. Black did a 1-2-3 bot tom of the sixth with 4k's for his two innings. Game 1 -- vs. Massena, N.Y. proved a tough foe, with Downer breaking a 0-0 deadlock in the fourth on O'Brodovich's single. Channing added to the margin on Davidson's hit. He scored on Ryan Malhotra's single who, in turn, scored on DeGroot's sin gle, 4-0! Pitching the shut-out O'Brodovich, Stewart and Black. Game 2 -- The team from Kanata was 'mercied' 11-0. RBI's by O'Brodovich (3), Mallough (3), Black, Channing, Malhotra, and Downer were the main reasons. Shut-out by Stewart and Dow. Game 3 -- Pincourt, Que. who had already lost to Kanata and Massena, upset a relaxed Oakville squad 4-2.
