Due to the combination of these two fac tors, and in order to avert any potential shortages, Canadian Blood Services (CBS) Toronto Centre is asking for cur rent donors and eligible new donors to come into a clinic and donate. "Over the past several weeks, the number of emergency surgeries and life saving procedures being performed by healthcare institutions has placed an above-normal demand on blood invento ries," said Bruce Goss, Centre Director for CBS, Toronto Centre. "We are cur rently meeting the demand for patients who have a critical need for blood or blood products, but we need the public's support now to avoid having any potential shortages." Summer traditionally poses a chal lenge to blood collections as regular donors may not be able to donate due to holiday schedules. The next Oakville Blood Donor Clinic will be held on: Wednesday, Aug. 23rd, at Croation Parish hall, 2110 Trafalgar Rd., north of Upper Middle Road, from 1 to 7:30 p.m. New baby brings big changes amilies come in all dif ferent shapes and sizes. Every year in Halton, over 4,000 families welcome a new baby. This tiny new mem ber presents new challenges and responsibilities for every one in the family, especially when he or she is the first baby. New parents must adapt to many changes and new experi ences all at once. They often find the early weeks very hec tic. A newborn has no under standing of days and nights! In the early weeks, many babies feed every two to three hours around the clock. They may choose a nighttime feed as their time to socialize. Spending time with your baby is helpful for bonding, but it is important to remember that baby's asleep time is the parents' time to re energize. Daytime naps are essential for new parents. In the first weeks home with a new baby, mom is expected to begin her new job as a parent while dealing with many body changes from the birth and pregnancy. She may be sore and feeling very tired. New parents need to remember to take care of them selves in order to give their best to their baby. Take advantage of all offers to help from family and friends, whether they offer to bring a casserole, do a load of laundry or pick-up some gro ceries. F HEAUH NOTES The Region of Halton has many programs to help make this transition as smooth as pos sible. Since each baby is unique and does not come with an owner's manual -- all new par ents have questions. As part of the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program, with a moth er's permission, new families will receive a telephone call from a Public Health Nurse within 48 hours o f coming home from the hospital. Then, if the new mother wishes, she can schedule a home visit from a Public Health Nurse at a convenient time. The nurse will discuss with mom how she, the baby, and other family members are doing and provide information on topics such as infant feed ing, safe baby equipment, baby care and programs, and ser vices in the community for young families. One group many new par ents enjoy attending is Calling New Parents. These groups are run by public health nurses on a weekly basis throughout n a t u r o p a t h t h e w h o i c V o lu n te e r s p e a k e r s h a v e h e a lth y p e r s p e c tiv e Volunteer speakers from the Oakville Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario are waiting to receive the call to speak at local businesses, groups, clubs, and institutions. The volunteer speakers have a wide range of backgrounds but each is an expe rienced presenter who is interested in furthering the promotion of healthy-lifestyle choices in the Oakville community. Those groups interested in booking a speaker, or finding out more about the Heart & Stroke Speakers Bureau, can call David Cravero, area manager, at the Halton Region office of the Foundation at 634-7732. Breastfeeding moms may also request a volunteer mother from the Halton Breastfeeding Connection, who will provide telephone support during the early weeks and months. It often helps to talk to another mother who has breastfed her self and understands the chal lenges a breastfeeding mom may face. Residents of Halton are for tunate to have many communi ty resources for new families. Parent-Child Centres, Parks and Recreation Departments and public libraries are agen cies in the community that offer programs for babies, parents, and children. Equally important are the Breastfeeding clinics offered at local area hospitals. Parents can call the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Phone Line at 905-693-4242 to dis cuss questions or concerns with a Public Health Nurse or to get more information about any of the services listed above. This service is offered Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. TTY 905-827-9833.
