Sunday, June 11, 2000 O a k v ille B e a v e r W e e ke n d 5 Province cu ts grant to award-winning program (C o n tin u e d fro m p a g e 1) centres -- Hamilton, Mississauga, Ingersoll, Tillsonbuig and Woodstock -- will also cease without further funding. Parent Watch originated in Oakville seven years ago, and moved to the Burlington meeting place a few years ago. Parent Watch is designed to pro vide support and information to par ents to help them identify and resolve problems with adolescents like drug use, assaults, truancy, vandalism, depression, academic failure and run ning away. Pidzamecky said about 1,500 dif ferent families have utilized the nocost service over its seven years. He said he has sent a letter to Ontario Solicitor General David Tsubouchi asking him to attend Monday's meeting. Pidzamecky has also asked Tsubouchi to reconsider his Ministry's recent refusal to continue offering Parent Watch a Partners in Crime grant. . What was supposed to be a one time grant in 1998 of $13,000 was renewed and increased to $26,000 in '99, he said, to reflect the addition of Parent Watch groups. Pidzamecky had been planning to expand the meetings to Niagara Falls and London this year and had request ed $30,000 in grants from the Province for 2000. He noted they also have been turned down for a $50,000 grant from a Federal crime prevention council. Pidzamecky said he and Smith received what he termed honorariums of about $5,000 each per year as some compensation for running the various Parent Watch groups. He added he has used his own money at times to cover overhead expenses. If Tsubouchi's Ministry does not relent on the grants issue, there is one avenue left for Parent Watch, he said. `I f we don't hear from the Ministry by the end of June, we'll send letters to police services." Parent Watch works in partnership with local police. Halton, HamiltonWentworth, Peel, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and Oxford police ser vices have sent an officer to each meeting in their area, said Pidzamecky. "If it comes to that, the police will have to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and decide if they want to absorb the cost within their budget" A D V E R T O R IA L T h e H u m a n R e s o u rc e C e n tre o f C an ad a F o r S t u d e n t s - O u t A n d O u t I n T h e C o m m u n ity !
