In fact I remember JIM Nissan styling guru ROBINSON Jerry Hirshberg, (now president of Nissan Design International) calling the Xterra a "toolbox for your life." It sounded a lit tle corny to me; but as it turns out, it was music to the ears of a Road Worthy _____________ lot of people who have been falling over themselves to get their hands on an Xterra, especially in Baywatch yellow like this week's tester. "We found a whole generation who use their vehicles like they use a good 2000 Nissan X terra piece of sports equipment," Hirshberg said at the time. "They also find many of today's SUVs are either too expen sive or lack the basic utility to meet their needs." Now here comes the good part of Hirshberg's reasoning behind the X terra." That realization led to a start ing point, a genesis for our Nissan Xterra. It was to create an affordable, rugged, quality piece of equipment. Xterra is about what people do with their vehicle, not so much what it might do." Well, he's right about that. Some SUVs are lapping close to the $70,000 plateau BEFORE options. Capable of going off road, the sheer weight and girth of these soft readers (as I call them) make you pray you never get stranded out in the bush because you might never get it out again except by a helicopter. Each year, just when you think Chrysler will put the old gal out to pasture, anxious buyers step up to purchase tens of thousands o f them. Talk about brand loyalty. Obviously, lots of folks love this hon est, straightforward sport ute, regard less of its age. The Cherokee marches on for 2000, but an all new-2001 version is in the works, proof that the model is a top gun in its niche. T h e addition of devices to redirect the air travel around the vehicle (spoilers) help offset the effects of lift.
