R E M E M B E R I N G A V E T E R A N 5 | Friday, November 18, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Dana Heddle visited Sunningdale School last week to tell her grandchildren's (Sydney and Spencer) classes the story of her father Thomas O'Donnell and his two brothers who fought at Vimy Ridge. Heddle brought in all the medals and the large "Death penny" that was presented to the mothers of fallen soldiers. She made it very real to the kids explaining to them her Uncle Frank threw himself on a grenade to save his platoon and survived. He was sent home without a stomach and lived for five years. He had to be fed through a tube and was carried around the house by his father. Her Uncle John died in the trenches and is buried at Vimy Ridge. Thomas, her father, pictured at left, survived and returned home to Hamilton. He had eight children -- one of them Dana. She explained to the students, had he not made it back... she, "myself and their classmates Sydney and Spencer" would not be here today.
