Town council voted during Monday night's (Nov. 14) council meeting to pass a bylaw that will increase the number of wards from six to seven. The bylaw also authorizes the election of one new councillor and one new regional councillor to serve this seventh ward moving the total number of councillors from 13 to 15. None of these changes will come into effect until the 2018 municipal election. In May 2015, Town staff were directed to revisit the ward boundaries to address the current inequities in representation within Oakville. The new Ward 7 would be made up of neighbourhoods north of Dundas Street with Burlington as the boundary to the west, and Eighth Line as the boundary to the east. "I've been fortunate enough during my brief time on council to have a few conversations with residents and they are awestruck over what our responsibilities are and how we manage those on a day-to-day basis," said Ward 1 Councillor Sean O'Meara. "Everybody recognizes the growth of the region and the town and understands those dimensions. I am very happy to support this. I think it is the right thing to do, to support all of our residents better and give them the service they are rightly asking for." We need to be appreciative and thankful for the neighbourly, cooperative and collaborative relationship we enjoy across the Region of Halton without which this would not have happened. This required the co-operation of at least three municipalities and I want to note, in the end, all four municipalities supported it. Rugs · Peerless Carpeting · 200 Store Buying Power As increased representation on Regional council required the approval of at least three of Halton's four municipalities, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton included them in expressing his gratitude to those who made that moment possible. "We need to be appreciative and thankful for the neighbourly, co-operative and collaborative relationship we enjoy across the Region of Halton without which this would not have happened," said Burton. "This required the co-operation of at least three municipalities and I want to note, in the end, all four municipalities supported it. So, there is a wonderful spirit of co-operation and feeling that we are all in it together across the Region of Halton that can't help but be good for the future for all our residents."
