Orono Weekly Times - Wednesday, August 14,2002 - 4 ilWtoh» ■85 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis f i if Another Nice Day It's after midnight August 14th, 2002. I'm sitting here thinking about this date two years ago today. It was 10 o'clock in the morning. I felt sick so I got down off the roof I was paint-. ing. For some reason that I still don't understand, Karen, the girl that works for me, called 911 because I didn't look well. Within minutes I was on my way to Bowmanville Hospital. As I was being unloaded from the ambulance, I had a heart attack. Then, my Heart quit not once, but twice and each time I was brought back to life. The next thing I remember was waking up in the intensive care unit. I had no idea what happened happened or what went wrong. I was wired up to all kinds of gadgets. Never had I been in a hospital for anything anything except stitches--and most of those wouldn't have been needed if I'd have kept my mouth shut. A nurse carried in a vase with a handle on it, and I asked "Where's the flowers?" She said it was a jug to pee in while lying down. I told her that I have done almost everything everything lying down at one time or another but peeing wasn't one of them. She replied that when I needed to go bad enough, I would. Then, I proceeded to tell her about the time I was at the Ganaraska Hotel in Port Hope when a guy bet me $15.00 that I couldn't drink twelve quarts of beer without going to the toilet. I drank the twelve and just for good measure, I drank one more. Port Hope was the only nearby place you could buy beer by the quart. The nurse was quite impressed! A few hours later, I got up and stood by the bed to pee setting setting off some kind of alarm which had the nurses all rushing rushing in. It scared the wits out of me. I didn't know I wasn't supposed supposed to get out of bed. After many tests, the specialist specialist found that I had a scar tissue build-up on one of the arteries leading to my heart. He asked if I had any idea how I might have a scar tissue build-up on the artery. "Let me know if you can remember anything that may have happened to you to cause this," he said. So, I made up a partial list and gave it to him. The list read something like this: Stomped, tromped, bucked off, kicked, stabbed and shot. Also, falling out of bams, trees, silos and bridges. I had been drove over, rolled over and passed over. The doctor looked at the list and asked if I had any idea which one might have caused the scar tissue build-up. "None," I replied. "I believe it was when I used to open beer bottles with my teeth and one day accidentally swallowed the cap. It must have stuck in the artery." Today I am fine. I take medication medication and get along very well. Each day I look up and give thanks for my extended life. .•.. ' ;:'V!:/" :, -j-f '-v this Saturday Orono Grown Lands enter at Ochonski Rd. I am thankful to her for saving my life and will be indebted to her forever. There are a couple of other things I would like to mention. This Saturday, August 17, the Orono Crown Lands are having having a corn roast. Take the Station Street road over to Ochonski Road and through the gate. It starts at 2 p.m. and continues until whenever. Another thing I would like to mention is about Matt Robinson. Matt and I worked a long time at the Orono Tree Nursery. The days have not been kind and Matt is having a struggle with a major illness. This is not the first obstacle Matt has had to overcome, but it may be the biggest. I would be more than pleased if the people that read my articles would send Matt a get well card. A sincere thanks to everyone who does. Matt Robinson c/o RO. Bowmanville Terry Fox Run seeks Terry's Team members Clarington's Terry Fox Run, scheduled to take place in Bowmanville September' 15, is seeking cancer survivors to volunteer as members of Terry's Team. "These individuals are reminders of why Terry Fox touched us all," said committee committee member Mary Tillcock. "They represent the ultimate goal of the run and of Terry Fox: an end to cancer." The 22nd annual run, now an international event, was inspired by Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope -- his attempt to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Terry's Team members assist organizers in Run Day promotion, and by telling their stories help highlight advances that have been made through cancer research funded by the Terry Fox Foundation. Terry's Team Members possess qualities reminiscent of Terry during his Marathon of Hope. They have bravely battled a daunting disease and now, by looking beyond their personal problems, might consider consider reaching out to others by participating in activities leading leading up to Run Day and/or on Run Day itself. "Terry's Team Members are living proof that cancer research works: they symbolize symbolize hope," said Ms. Tillcock. "As people whose cancer is in remission, they show that the funds raised through the Terry Fox Runs are producing results." The Bowmanville Terry Fox Run last year raised $70,977 making it the eighth largest in fund-raising out of more than 220 sites in Ontario. Anyone interested in becoming a Terry's Team Member, or who would like more information on other volunteer opportunities associated associated with the Bowmanville Terry Fox Run, please contact Mary Tillcock at 905-623- 4326. à i $ &<• 100 Varieties of 1 Hostas & Perennials * , . / .yy.i * ■ . ! -v, v '..v,v,v,v.v : W W'Ul "W.W '^L' -- TwntonRd •' I ■ Cone Rd 6 www.davidburns.ca jBgaaMBBMMasmSBgaBBSMBBMMBBaMBaSMBBBMBBB# Gardens 5147 Patterson Road Orono, Ontario L0I3 I MO Tel.
