Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 30,2002 - 6 ) NEWCASTLE BOWLING Novices overpower Ops The Orono Novice Rep team (sponsored by Major Plumbing) played an amazing game on Friday night. Orono hosted Ops and showed them who owned the ice with a win of 15-0. If you weren't watching the game you might have missed a goal! Hard work and great positioning positioning paid off for Orono with each and every player either making a goal or assisting in a goal. The first period indicated what kind of game it was going to be, ending with a 6-0 lead. Goals were provided by Evan Rosseau (3), Tyson Robinson (2), and Zachary Gibson (1). Assists were provided by Mitchell Jackson (2), Michael Richards (2), Evan Rosseau (1), Matthew Verkuyl (1), Mitchell Marchbank (1), Dylan Dennis (1), Zachary Gibson (1) and Corey Peters (1). What a great beginning with a minimum of 17 seconds between goals! In the second period, the team was steadfast and added three more goals making it 9-0. Goals were provided by Stefan Fabricius (1), Michael Richards ( 1 ), Matthew Verkuyl (1), assisted by Dylan Dennis (1). The minimum break between goals was 24 seconds. In the third period, the team was still showing everyone who owned the ice by gaining another 6 goals, making the final score 15-0. The game was fast paced and exciting and Orono fought hard to take the win. Newcastle started the scoring scoring off late in the first period. Orono tied the game with 4:40 to go in the second period with hard work around the net resulting in a goal by Andrew Fudge and an assist for Tyler Skelton 1 . Less than a minute later Newcastle scored again to put them in the lead by one goal. Orono played well in the third period. They scored 3 goals within four minutes.. Sam Leggott scored her first goal of the season on a beautiful beautiful cross-ice pass from Denis Beenen. Another great pass from Beenen found David Gray at the side of the net for a tap in goal with the assist also going to Brock McGill. The final goal came from Dustin Armstrong who picked the puck up off of a blocked point shot from Michael Whelan with an assist going to Andrew Fudge as well. This game featured great defensive zone coverage. Also working hard in the game were Jonathan Picco, Kenny Jackson, Kevin Bourke and Jamie Stevens. Michael Hisson played strong in net. The team played extremely well together and even managed managed to win without taking any penalties. -KW Pressure for Major Tykes On October 19, the Orono Major Tykes played a close game in Bowmanville against Hunter Sports Photography. Ian Third was outstanding in net for Orono with many great saves, including a couple of glove saves. Chris Haass opened the scoring early in the first period on a nice pass from Curtis Stainton. Hunter Sports quickly answered with a goal. Early in the second period, Hunter Sports scored another goal. Jennifer Mercer countered countered with a goal for Orono on one of several breakaways and her hard work paid off. The game remained tied until the dying seconds of the third period period when Hunter Sports jumped on a loose puck and scored, handing Orono a 3-2 loss. Friday night in Orono did not go as well. Orono played a tough Motor City Saturn team. Josh Gallina was in net for Orono and did a good job to keep the score 2-0 after the first period. Warren Ball Had a great chance offensively and Storm Wolla made a great move defensively to help prevent a goal. The second period was Orono's downfall with Motor City scoring five times. Orono was able to net one by Curtis Stainton, unassisted. (Congratulations on your first goal, Curtis!) The rest of the game was scoreless ending in a 7-1 loss for Orono.
