Area residents urged to put brakes on aggressive driving WHITBY, ON, October 28, 2002 - Durham Region Health Department is urging area residents residents to "Stop the Madness" through the launch of a region-wide aggressive driving driving campaign from Nov. 4 to 17. Developed by the Health . Department in partnership with Durham Regional Police Service, the Stop the Madness Aggressive Driving Campaign focuses on giving drivers information on how to respond to an aggressive driver driver and maintain safety while out on the road. "Our key message throughout throughout this campaign is that aggressive driving can kill," says Sandy White, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. According to provincial statistics, statistics, 420 deaths were attrib uted to aggressive driving in Ontario in 1999 making this issue an increasingly dangerous dangerous problem on provincial roads. "The Stop the Madness campaign is based on increasing increasing drivers' knowledge and public awareness," explains Ms. White. "We're urging motorists that if they're confronted confronted by aggressive drivers, first and foremost make every attempt to get out of their way. Do not challenge them by speeding up or by attempting to block their path. Our message message is for drivers to put their pride in the backseat and report aggressive driving to the appropriate authorities instead of responding with anger." Of the 32 party faithful who turned out to the nomination meeting at Orono Town Hall Friday night, 95% threw their support behind Bruinsma. In his acceptance speech, Bruinsma thanked party members members for their support, stating "if a candidate has run three times in a general election and still hasn't won a seat, people generally give up on you." Bruinsma, who has been the CHP candidate through the last 3 federal elections, said, "it's not easy for me when all-can- didates meetings come around especially when I don't have the tools of a great education. However, I am not alone," said Bruinsma. "I have your support, and God is here." When Party Executive Director, Thomas Sabourin, took the floor he quoted scripture scripture saying, " 'woe to those who call evil good, and good evil.' We are living in a pluralistic pluralistic society and the buzz word today is tolerance." Sabourin said he can be tolerant, but that doesn't mean he has to accept society's ways. The CHP claim they are Canada's only pro-life, pro- family federal political party, and the only federal party that endorses the principles of the Preamble to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the Canadian Constitution: 'Canada was founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law.' "I'm sick of people saying they're speaking for me," said Sabourin. "The other politicians politicians and candidates are not speaking for me," he stated. "We need to get excited. We've got to rally the troops. We're preaching morality, and we're living in an immoral society." The CHP is taking particular exception to B.C. M.P. Svend Robinson's private member's bill, known as the hate propaganda propaganda legislation, which if passed, will expand the definition definition of an 'identifiable group' in the Criminal Code to mean any section of the public distinguished distinguished by colour, race, religion, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation. "If we say something against homosexuality, it's hate literature," said Sabourin. The Bill has passed first and second reading and is currently in committee hearings. "If it [the Bill] passes, what I've just said would make me an outlaw," said Sabourin. "Before I shut- up about these things, I'm going to shout about it. Yes, I will be tolerant but I don't have to accept these things." The CHP, was founded in 1986, and fielded candidates in the 1988 election. Official party status was lost when they were unable to sign up the required*50 candidates in the last federal election--they had 46. National party membership membership to date stands at 5,700. "Things can happen in Canada but they won't happen if we sit in our easy chair," said Bruinsma as he rallied the troops. Chocolate Letters are 6ere...
