Oakville brothers speedskating for Ireland Oakville residents Ryan and Sean McAnuff are competing internationally this weekend as members of Ireland's short track speedskating team, The brothers become the first speedskaters to compete in an international competition representing Ireland. Ryan, 21, and Sean, 19, will participate in the 2016 Short Track Desert Classic at the Utah Olympic Oval, the speedskating venue for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. They were selected to represent Ireland in the event after the Ice Skating Association of Ireland (ISAI) was granted speedskating membership last month by the International Skating Union, the international governing body for the sport of ice skating. "We're honoured and very excited to be representing Ireland," Sean said. "By going to this and other competitions, we want to increase the profile and participation in the sport back in Ireland as well." The Short Track Desert Classic is one of the competitions listed on the ISU calendar where skaters can skate qualifying times that will allow them to enter ISU Short Track World Cup events and ISU championships later in the 201617 season. "We both need a time of 53 seconds or under for 500 metres to qualify for this season's World Cups," Ryan said. "That is our main focus at this competition." 27 | Friday, August 12, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com What are you crowdfunding for? fuellocal.com is an online platform to raise money through crowdfunding: an opportunity for a collection of individuals to make donations in support of a cause.
