After falling behind 1-0, Oakville scored four unanswered third period goals to win the championship game over Grimsby 4-1. Matt Downer and Jamie McKeown led the way with a goal and an assist each, with Spencer Jenkin and Patrick Channing chip ping in goals. Adding assists were Joey Cicchini, Taylor Hodgkinson and Matt Grigg. Oakville opened the round robin with their only laugher -- 7-0 over Kitchener. Each team had opportunities to win both in regu lation time as well as in each of the overtime stanzas. Like two heavyweights going at it in a championship fight, both teams were tired but neither was going to concede vic tory. The provincial championships mark the end to a very successful inaugural season for Vytis. Most of the girls were playing competitive basketball for the first time and improved dramatically since December. Their athleticism and the dedication made them competitive against the very best teams in the province. Tournaments in Oakville, Hamilton and Sarnia The Oakville Vytis bantam triple-A girls basketball team hosted their own elite tournament last month at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary school. With teams ranked in the top-10 of the province on hand, Oakville Vytis bounced back from two tough opening losses to ring off three straight wins en route to the consolation championship. Here are the results. Oakville Vytis lost their opener in overtime 49-41 to Ancaster Magic. High scorers for Vytis were Andreja Sergautis and Sarah Dillon (E.J. James) with 10 points each followed by Erin Valickis and Robyn Starr. Offensive rebounds were controlled by Lauren Corkum (Our Lady of Peace). The results were nearly identical in the second game, although it didn't get to overtime, with Oakville Vytis losing another close one, 36-31 to St. Catharines Rebels. Next on tap was the number two ranked team in the province, Sarnia's Huron Lakers, and Vytis got back on the winning track, 4035. Scoring contributions of 8 points each were made by Megan Stang (Our Lady of Peace) and Sarah Dillon (E.J. James). They were followed by Whitney Haswell and Erin Valickis. Vytis evened up their record as they met Windsor for the first time this year and won 36-27. High scorers were Whitney Haswell with 13 points, Erin Valickis and Lauren Corkum. Offensive and defensive boards were controlled by Lauren Corkum and Andreja Sergautis. The win earned Vytis a trip to the consolation finals where they won a rematch with Ancaster, decisively, 61-37.
