After falling behind 1-0, Oakville scored four unanswered third period goals to win the championship game over Grimsby 4-1. Matt Downer and Jamie McKeown led the way with a goal and an assist each, with Spencer Jenkin and Patrick Channing chip ping in goals. Adding assists were Joey Cicchini, Taylor Hodgkinson and Matt Grigg. Oakville opened the round robin with their only laugher -- 7-0 over Kitchener. In Sunday's consolation semifinal, Vytis dispatched 7th ranked Gloucester Wolverines 44-35, thereby setting the stage for a rematch with Welland in the consola tion championship. And what a final it was! Each team played their hearts out with Welland finally prevailing in double overtime, 54-52. Each team had opportunities to win both in regu lation time as well as in each of the overtime stanzas. Like two heavyweights going at it in a championship fight, both teams were tired but neither was going to concede vic tory. The provincial championships mark the end to a very successful inaugural season for Vytis. Most of the girls were playing competitive basketball for the first time and improved dramatically since December. Their athleticism and the dedication made them competitive against the very best teams in the province. Congratulations g® to Megan Antonutti, Jessie Barrett, Michelle Blaha, Andrea Corkum, Krysten DeSouza, Amanda Douglas, Janina Duliunas, Emily Fox, Emma Haddon, Alanna Jordan, Laura Mancuso, Carleigh Martin, Jessie Mills, Kirsten Passmore, and Jillian Stanaitis. Andrews and Cicchini each had two goals, with Jenkin adding the other goal. Assists went to McKeown (2), Sean Blaesing, Brett Chandler, Anthony Farrow, Hodgkinson and Marco Rodrigues. The next morning, the Rangers beat Grimsby, 3-2. Alexander Proksch was strong in net for Oakville tf> secure the win. Daniel Desjardins, Hodgkinson and McKeown scored for the Rangers, with Cicchini (2), Andrews, Channing and Downer adding assists. Oakville secured their spot in the cham pionship game with a 3-2 win over Burlington. Scoring were Farrow, Downer, and Tyson Theaker. Helpers on the goals came from McKeown (2), Farrow, Andrews and Harry Hristopoulos. Tournaments in Oakville, Hamilton and Sarnia The Oakville Vytis bantam triple-A girls basketball team hosted their own elite tournament last month at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary school. With teams ranked in the top-10 of the province on hand, Oakville Vytis bounced back from two tough opening losses to ring off three straight wins en route to the consolation championship. Here are the results. Oakville Vytis lost their opener in overtime 49-41 to Ancaster Magic. High scorers for Vytis were Andreja Sergautis and Sarah Dillon (E.J. James) with 10 points each followed by Erin Valickis and Robyn Starr. Offensive rebounds were controlled by Lauren Corkum (Our Lady of Peace). Excellent hustle by Krista Sestokas (St. Luke's) and defensive boards controlled by Lauren Corkum with help from Andreja Sergautis. The results were nearly identical in the second game, although it didn't get to overtime, with Oakville Vytis losing another close one, 36-31 to St. Catharines Rebels. High scorers in this tough game were Andreja Sergautis with 8 points followed by Robyn Starr and Lauren Corkum. Offensively Andreja Sergautis, Robyn Starr and Lauren Corkum took care of the boards. At the other end, defensive boards were handled by Whitney Haswell (Falgarwood), Megan Stang (Our Lady of Peace) and Krista Sestokas (St. Luke's). Next on tap was the number two ranked team in the province, Sarnia's Huron Lakers, and Vytis got back on the winning track, 4035. Scoring contributions of 8 points each were made by Megan Stang (Our Lady of Peace) and Sarah Dillon (E.J. James). They were followed by Whitney Haswell and Erin Valickis. Vytis evened up their record as they met Windsor for the first time this year and won 36-27. High scorers were Whitney Haswell with 13 points, Erin Valickis and Lauren Corkum. Offensive and defensive boards were controlled by Lauren Corkum and Andreja Sergautis. The win earned Vytis a trip to the consolation finals where they won a rematch with Ancaster, decisively, 61-37. High scorers were led by Whitney Haswell with 18 points and Lauren Corkum with 12 points followed by Andreja Sergautis and Robyn Starr. Again, the hustle and assists of Krista Sestokas (St. Luke's) and Holly Quinn (St. Joseph's) were major contributions which translated into points for Vytis. Offensive rebounds were taken care of by Whitney Haswell, Diana Cosme (Our Lady of Peace), Lauren Corkum and Andreja Sergautis. HAMILTON TOURNEY Oakville Vytis bantam AAA basketball team failed to advance in the Hamilton tournament despite a 2-1 record. Oakville opened with a 54-24 win over North Toronto `86. High scorers were Megan Stang (Our Lady of Peace) with 16 points fol lowed by Andreja Sergautis, Holly Quinn (St. Joseph's) and Erin Valickis. Offensive boards were controlled by Andreja Sergautis and Erin Valickis. Defensive boards were held by Erin Valickis and Whitney Haswell. Oakville then defeated Brockville Blazers 59-24. Oakville settled for their third silver medal of the year, losing 41 33 to Hamilton Transway, a team they had beaten in the preliminary round (38-33). High scorers were Erin Valickis with 9 points, Andreja Sergautis with 8 points and Holly Quinn with 6 points. Offensive rebounders were Lauren Corkum, Erin Valickis and Andreja Sergautis. Defensive boards were controlled by Sarah Dillon, Lauren Corkum and Whitney Haswell. Oakville had recorded their 38-33 win over Hamilton in the opening game. The next game was against the host team, the Huron Lakers. Vytis again won but it was tight, 42-38.
