We are just at the beginning of a new year so it's only natural that while we are looking forward we also take a look back. Heritage Week helps us to look back at how Oakville grew into a community rich in culture and her itage. To become the Town we are today, many people endured hard times - the Depression, World War I, World War II - and in times of distress, people show their spirit and fortitude by coming together. This togetherness was evident most recently when the tragic events of September 11 forever changed our world. As neighbours to the United States, we offered sympathy and shared in their grief. The Oakville community showed overwhelming support at a memorial service and an evening vigil held here at Town Hall, expressed condo lences in a book we made available, and par ticipated in an interfaith service to show our united strength against terrorism. Our support now goes to the men and women from the United States, Canada and other nations who continue the fight against terrorism. We are encouraged by their strength and perseverance and are confident that good will prevail. The events of "nine-eleven" have strength ened our sense of community as well as our desire to celebrate our history and heritage. That's why it's appropriate that this year's Heritage Week supplement in the Oakville Beaver reflect on how the war has affected our community. Look inside and learn about wartime housing in Oakville, the courageous people who lost their lives fighting for free dom, and of course about our history and other heritage sites around Town. The Town of Oakville is extremely proud of its efforts to protect its heritage. In coopera tion with our businesses and residents, we have worked hard to ensure our heritage is there for future generations to enjoy. Oakville currently has over 120 individual properties and three districts designated under the Heritage Act, but this would not be possible without community involvement. Residents serve on Heritage Oakville and the Oakville Heritage Trails Committee. We have two Historical Societies, Oakville and Bronte, working to preserve our heritage properties and help homeowners who are interested in having their home designated a Heritage site. With the continued support and assistance of our residents, efforts toward the preservation of our historical distinctiveness and natural beauty will be ongoing. There is an economic, cultural and emo tional value to a community preserving its her itage. In these times of rapid change and growth, it is even more important that a com munity knows from where they have come. During times of conflict and war, it is natural that we reflect on our history and strive to pre serve our heritage. Communities who know and build on their past are much more compe tent to recognize and fully utilize the opportu nities of the day and the future. As our com munity vision declares: Oakville is "a dynam ic community working together - respecting the past, celebrating the present, embracing the future." Yours very sincerely, Name th at p la ce How well do you know your architectural heritage? We have chosen four photos of modern architec ture in Oakville. They are placed throughout the Heritage supplement. Name all four places correctly and you can win a $50 dining gift certificate to a local restaurant. G ood luck!
