www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, July 7, 2016 | 10 Fire guts garden centre building Saturday evening by Graham Paine and David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The Oakville Fire Department says a fire that caused $150,000 to an Oakville landscaping business, Saturday (July 2), appears to have been started by some kind of electrical short. The blaze at Agram Garden Centre on Ninth Line, south of Dundas Street, broke out shortly before 8 p.m. Smoke could be seen for kilometres. Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig said heavy smoke and flames were coming from the windows of the business and through the roof when firefighters arrived. The Oakville Fire Department had 24 firefighters and six trucks at the scene. Fire crews quickly knocked down the blaze and prevented it spreading to other buildings on the property. No one was inside when the fire started. Ninth Line was closed from Dundas Street to Upper Middle Road as firefighters fought the blaze. The damage to the property has been estimated at $150,000. Oakville Fire is reminding residents to avoid overloading electrical circuits through the use of multiple extension cords and plugging too many appliances into a single outlet.
