The Oakville Rangers peewee triple-A rep team have put themselves in a position to win the Ontario champi onship and are guaranteed at least a silver medal. The Ontario M inor Hockey Association (OMHA) cham pions won their semifinal game 4-3 over the Ottawa Valley Titans on Friday to earn a berth into the provincial cham pionship game. They will face the Toronto Marlboros who won their sem ifinal game 4-1 over the Lambton Lightning. The gold medal game is slated for Saturday, 1 p.m. Down 3-2 going into the final frame of their semifinal game, a pair of goals by Charlie Giffin gave Oakville the comeback victory. Ben Heersink and Tyler Donati also scored. Assists went to Nick Dodge (3), Charlie Giffin, Dan Ringwald, Andy MacDonald and Graham Tough. Not only is she in her first year with the national senior ` rhythmic gymnastics team, but she helped her team, based out of the Etobicoke Olympium, to a bronze medal at the national championships back in November. That top-three finish gained the team an invite to an exciting international event in Greece this month -- the Kalamata Cup which w ill be held April 14-16. The 15-year-old Oakville resident, who attends Grade 10 at Silverthorn Collegiate (to be near her training), w ill warm up for her first international meet by competing in the Elite Ontario event April 9 at Humber College. Her fam ily has lived in Oakville for four years. Tough loss in OMHA semifinal series The Oakville Rangers atom A A rep team missed a shot at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (O M H A ) champi onship playdowns by the slimmest of mar gins. They bowed out of their O M H A semi final series against Caledon in the fifth and final game, 2-1. And it wasn't even the closest game of the series -- not by far. Three of the other games were still tied after regulation time and had to be decided in overtime (with two going to Caledon and one to O akville). The biggest margin of victory was game two when Oakville authored a com parative blow out with a two-goal winning margin in a 4-2 win. The fifth and deciding game was score less through two periods, before Caledon finally reached the finish line first with a 2-1 margin in the final frame of the game and the series. Matt Riddell scored for O akville, assisted by atom-A call-up Garrett Ince. Oakville earned the right to play in a fifth game with a 3-2 overtime win in game four. A tight contest with strong goaltending forced this game into extra time, where O akville's Fraser M illigan scored the winner. Justin Wilson-Kirby and Matt Bandy scored the regulation time goals. Assists went to M illigan, Brett Thompson and Garrett Ince. In game three, it was Caledon that pre vailed in overtime, also by a 3-2 margin, to take a 2-1 series lead. Oakville found themselves coming from behind again, as they continuously battled to the final buzzer. Their hard work paid off, tying the game in the third period, but giving up the winning goal in the extra frame. Garrett Ince and Brett Thompson scored for O akville. Assists went to Matt Riddell and Fraser M illigan. The biggest margin of victory came in game two, where O akville got their first win of the series, 4-2, in Caledon. The Rangers got off to a quick start, and did not look back, as they held a two-goal lead for the majority of the game. O akville's offence came from Fraser M illig an , (See 'Atom AA' page 25) No upset in the provincial semifinals The Oakville Hornets atom BB rep team, sponsored by Canada Vacations, had their playoff drive brought to a halt in the North Metro Girls Hockey League semifinals as they could not pull off an upset over the Whitby Wolves. Whitby showed why they were the first place team throughout the regular season with a 3-0 win. Oakville was controlling the play for the first part of the game, but were not able to put the puck in the net. Whitby scored when they had the chance, and that proved to be the Hornets' downfall. The loss sent the Hornets into the consolation championship game against the Stouffville Stars. Oakville and Stouffville were tied late in the third, with overtime on everyone's minds, when with only 14 seconds left in regulation the Stars scored the game-winner. The Oakville Hornets' combined record in 1999-2000 was 28-21-16, and to go with that was a respectable 1.53 goals against average, including 18 shutouts. The season was high lighted by tournament wins in Mississauga, Orangeville and their home town. The atom B B Hornets team included Roxanne Johnson, Traci Galbraith, Monique Kahnert, Kaitlyn Wheeler, Jackie Szarka, Sarah Grigor, Stephanie Wilson, Tenille Clarke, Charlotte Capaldo, Taylor Laughlin and Erin Mitzel. S E M IF IN A L The Hornets had earned a berth into the North Metro Girls Hockey League champi onships after prevailing over the Oshawa Panthers in a three-game playoff series. Oakville actually lost the final game 2-1 but got the nod on goal differential which they built up with a key 5-0 win in the second game. The opening game was a 1-1 stalemate. Oakville's lone goal in their lackluster 2-1 loss was Monique Kahnert, assisted by Brittany Court and Taylor Laughlin. Sarah Grigor led the goal explosion in the second game with a pair while single markers were added by Melissa Snedden, Megan Wanless and Tenille Clarke. Assists went to Roxanne Johnson (2), Kaitlyn Wheeler, Traci Galbraith, Monique Kahnert, Stephanie Secord and Brittany Court. Scoring the lone goal in the opening game 1-1 deadlock was Tenille Clarke from Stephanie Secord. Monday night league wraps up The Monday Night Hockey League recently held its champi onship game with Mark Kirton's Royal LePage defeating the M ilton Legion 5-4 in overtime. It capped off an exciting year for all teams. Leading all scorers was Marc Richard with a natural hat-trick. Other scorers for Royal LePage were Paul Jeffrey and Ben Paniccia with the winning goal in overtime. Assists to Peter Critikos, Mark Bisson, M ike James, Steve (M oker) Blundy, and Paul Jeffrey. Scoring for the Legion were George Finn (2) and Rob McCullogh (2). Assists went to Steve Scannell (2), John Perrault (2), and Paulo Zulian. Outstanding goaltending by Royal LePage's Ray Dalby and M ilton's Murray Hofstetter kept both teams close throughout the game.. The Monday Night Hockey League is the oldest running men's league in O akville. It was established in 1952.
